Farewell, Boar Revoir: 2025’s team bid goodbye
Our outgoing Editorial Board for 2025–26 bid farewell, and give their final thoughts about their time with The Boar.
Martin Day – Editor-in-Chief
How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. My time at Uni has been so absurdly defined by this paper, and its gradually encroaching hold over my life: a monthly, then weekly, and now daily commitment to random articles, emails, and office admin worthy of a full-time job. My involvement with The Boar goes beyond University, in fact, when at an Open Day in 2022 I was persuaded to sign up to a non-existent Boar newsletter. It’s been four mad years since. I’ve installed shelves and built a shed, been threatened with two lawsuits, broken out of the SU building, been accused of affiliation to the Mossad, and reported concerts, matches, tournaments, and protests. Really, I’ve spent the majority of my academic life here in this office. In doing so, I met the best friends I’ve ever had.
Thanks to Luke and Archie, you foundational Hogs who thought appointing a fresher as News Editor was a good idea, and who I hope were mostly vindicated; to Ben and to Sanjana, without whom I would have been utterly swept away by the roaring tide of responsibilities; to Tom and Nikolai, the two wings of a luxury News aircraft, and incomparable reporters, protégés, and friends; to Áine, despite it all, for taking the leap with me.
If there’s one big takeaway from this, it’s that for a 52-year-old society, the institutional memory of this place is appalling. I’m not sure anyone I haven’t told knows about the archive on our website, or that our offices used to be much larger, in the old Liberation Room. Hopefully a future Editor can get them back. All the time I’ve been here, I have tried to defy that smug notion that newspapers can only decline. To future Exec: demolish the wall between Offices 1 and 2! Build a second shed! Leave the Students’ Union! I will forever be with you in spirit.
Sanjana Iyer – Editor-in-Chief
I wish I could go back and tell the girl who almost didn’t apply to be a Comment Deputy Editor four years ago why applying was one of the best decisions she ever made. The Boar office quickly became my home on campus, not because of its bright red walls but because of every person who has passed through which made my time at university brighter than I could have ever imagined. For all the hours we have spent together in and outside those four walls, bonds that began over InDesign disasters and WordPress woes are now ones I know I will have for life. It’s safe to say this society has kept me on my toes. Never once did I imagine I would be building a shed as the sun set (along with our will to keep going), see through a charity print fundraising for an amazing cause, be our in-house tech support as the computers constantly crashed, speed write for all 16 sections before I graduate, and so much more. But for it all I will be infinitely grateful. To Ben, Ruby, Nikolai, and Georgia who have kept me and this paper going more than can be expressed; to Martin for propping this great institution up immensely; to Odette who revived my love for the paper even when I was an English Channel away; to Emily and Ellie who are like my Boar big sisters, thank you for everything. Also a huge thank you to every member of this exec who made my fourth year so much more incredible than I anticipated this time last year. This paper and this society is the greatest home away from home a girl could ever ask for and that is because of all you, so to every single one of you that makes The Boar what it is, thank you.
Naomi Pandey – DEIC Head of Communications
From my first article about R.F. Kuang’s Yellowface to planning for elections night, my journey at The Boar has been inconceivable. At first, I just wanted to do have something to do with an editorial board at university – even throughout school, editorial boards were a huge part of my journey, so it seemed only normal to continue that trajectory. What I didn’t anticipate was just how far the reach of The Boar could be. The freedom to be able to write about anything, including my niche interests to getting to attend gigs with my friends for free, it’s impossible to imagine what university would’ve been like without The Boar. While I’m not pursuing a career in conventional journalism, the experience, the people and the challenges have been entirely indelible and necessary.
Diya Tanna – DEIC Head of Physical Media
When I first joined The Boar, my only experience had been in magazines- quite a different approach to design. I owe it to Sanjana, finding me on LinkedIn and convincing me to run, but it was so worth it.
I didn’t expect to love newspaper design, but being Head of Physical Media has been one of the most rewarding parts of my time here. There’s something incredibly gratifying about working hard on a digital document and then seeing it come to life in the physical newspaper. I am more in love with print than ever.
Thank you so much to the rest of the team for keeping everything running, holding my hand throughout the unfamiliar process, and being infectiously passionate about The Boar.
Ben Tanguy – DEIC Chief Sub-Editor
Under the watchful eye of Boaris, the past year and a half has seen many an Oxford comma, many a mid-layup crisis, and many a happy memory made in the occasionally traumatic confines of Office 1 (which, for better or worse, has become a second home). While I joined the paper a little later than some of my fellow exec, I can safely say that my uni experience wouldn’t have been the same without The Boar. I’ve come all the way from crashing out over InDesign as a Deputy Sub-Editor to crashing out over InDesign as the Chief Sub-Editor.
The paper has taken me to places I would never have otherwise ventured, from an existentially challenging stint at Stoke-on-Trent Spoons at 9am to a festival in Paris, where I attended a press conference with one of my favourite bands ever. In some ways, it’s the smaller moments I’ll cherish most; while dashing around the SU to cover last year’s elections was unforgettable, so too were doing laps of campus for distribution and Nikolai spilling soup in the office during a moment of intense crisis. I never thought I’d end up building a shed in arctic temperatures, either. Post-layup T-Bar deserves a special mention, too.
Particular thanks must go to Sanjana, Nikolai, Ruby, and Martin, without whom I would have lost my mind several prints ago; to every one of the exec who has gone above and beyond their role, I thank you for making my job that little bit more manageable. To conclude: I will complete the Whole Hog before I graduate, and I promise I will finish that new style guide if it kills me. I wish my successor the best of luck (and a similarly chronic attention to grammatical detail).
Abbie Fox – Head of Social Media
I will be forever glad that in the Easter break of first year I decided to apply for Head of Social Media on a whim at 2am, to try to tick off a New Year’s Resolution of being more involved in a society (apologies if you read my Boar Revoir last year, in which case this might sound a bit familiar, and probably repetitive). Running the social media and writing articles has been extremely rewarding, but it’s honestly the people at The Boar which are the best. A special shoutout to my deputy, Sarah, for her amazingly helpful work (and for her iconic mini mics)! I will never forget completing my first remote lay-up, with a free trial of InDesign, no template, and a laptop which was having a meltdown (me too) trying to create the page from scratch in 35-degree heat. Luckily, someone later had the bright idea of switching my page to Canva (shoutout to whoever this was, and to Canva, which will always hold a special place in my heart and a scarily large proportion of my screen time). More importantly however, thank you to everyone who has been a part of my time in this society, and to those who have helped me with the relaunch of The Boar TikTok by starring in videos (especially during layup week, when I’m usually milling about the office just to yap). I know I wouldn’t have had the same experience at Warwick without The Boar, and I’m definitely going to miss it. Now I just need to write for Travel so I can say I’ve ticked off all 16 sections and finally completed the Whole Hog…
George Marshall – Head of Multimedia
Firstly, I would like to admit that I have only been Head of Multimedia for a short period of time – whilst that might mean I have had less time to have a plethora of experiences, I have certainly loved every minute at this fine institution. However, saying that, I did spend an entire Wednesday afternoon/evening building the print shed: I think it’s safe to say that I have already left my mark!
Before I get on to who I want to thank, I would like to spend a few sentences saying why I have found so much joy in this society so much. From the awards, to the incredible community, to the amazing writers and of course, the charity week, I am so happy that as Head of Multimedia I am able to be a part of so much! Having experienced a range of societies, The Boar is certainly second to none.
It’s fantastic to have such a close-knit, committed community that has allowed multimedia to achieve so much already: article explainers, charity videos, exciting interviews and revitalising our SU election coverage.
The first people I would like to thank is Will, Cianan and Nikolai for being such friendly people before I joined The Boar. As you go on to do amazing things, you deserve every success. I would also like to thank Martin and Sanjana – you provided such an amazing welcome and mentioned something every production person dreams of… a budget. I also want to thank Ben for making me take a photo under the table in the 24-hour library challenge (not that he asked or anything). And finally, I want to thank Tom and Abbie for all their help in planning and distributing.
Not to be Boar-ing or anything… but I’ll have to stop there because I’m out of words.
Nikolai Morton – News Editor
My University experience would honestly be nothing without this society. It’s made me more confident, given me experiences I could never have imagined, and brought with it friends for life. Getting to know and spend time with you all on nights out or in the offices (or during layup nights in the offices) has been nothing short of a joy, and I’ll miss this paper dearly.
In my exec tenure I’ve had a crazy range of experiences – from interviewing TV personalities and appearing on local radio, to even freezing to death in a car park building a shed. And yet I still haven’t done the Whole Hog. All this has been with the best people by my side, whether out day-drinking (rather a lot) in the summer with the gang or on our mini Boar tours to Exeter and Stoke-on-Trent. Breaking the bank on Duck pints and Co-Op meal deals with all-round connoisseur Ben had to stop at some point. In short, I’ve done it all, and drank it all.
In student journalism there’s been no work-life balance for me – they’ve been one and the same these past few years, and it’s been a blast. There’s too many of you to thank – people I’ve laughed with aplenty but also been vulnerable with – but special shoutouts go to Tom, a colleague but more so a friend whom I admire very much, to our wonderful deps, and to that wellspring of journalistic wisdom, Martin – the first Boar member I met (on the bus to the Boar Awards no less!), and who took a chance on me in October of second year. Ruby, Ben, Luke, Georgia, Sanjana, Will, and my departed Boar mother Abi – you’ve also been special parts of my university experience both at this paper and beyond.
I look forward to what the future holds as I hop down to London for a Broadcast Journalism MA, but will hold dear my formative years with you lot and Boaris by my side forever.
Tom Ryan – News Editor
Rewind three years and I can remember being that shy little fresher, turning up to T-Bar for a meet the exec event before quickly running in the opposite direction, feeling horrendously underqualified for any position at The Boar. It would take me another few months to pluck up the courage to write my first article, a Books feature for the 50th anniversary print. Am I glad I eventually hit send on that article.
The past two years have been an absolute blast. I’d need a whole Features article to even start scratching the surface of everyone I’d like to thank. From my Co-Editor, Nikolai, to my Deps, to the News team’s tireless Subs… I owe so many of you a drink.
In fear of sounding overly sentimental, there’s one last thing I’d like to write. Perhaps the real headline all along was less the stories we told, and more the friends we made.
Without The Boar, I’d never have found myself celebrating my 21st birthday fighting InDesign, yapping in the beer garden of an Exeter Spoons, or jetting off to Málaga for some much-needed winter sun.
Of course, holding the University to account will never not be satisfying, but I’m sure what I’ll remember the most in years to come are the laughs shared and the memories made with friends.
To everyone I’ve ever ranted to about pitching or layup, I love you all. And, yes, if I ever write an autobiography, let it be known that Boaris will feature in the acknowledgements.
If my wisdom counts for anything, then let it count for this: join that WhatsApp group, take a pitch, and never look back.
Will Moores – Opinion Editor
Editing the Opinion section this past year has been a real pleasure. Thank you to my deputies Annalise, Arianna, Emily, Henrik, and Luke, and to my sub-editors Ananya, Tilly, and Zahraa. You’ve all been fantastic.
It will be sad to say goodbye to many elements of the role (obviously excluding pitching, shouting at InDesign, desperately checking that I haven’t spelt someone’s name wrong, and more). However, the opportunity to read and release so many engaging pieces throughout the year has made the job great fun, and for that, I must thank the hundreds of contributing writers.
Another big thank you to Nikolai, Ben, Martin, Tom, and Sanjana for putting up with me asking lots of unnecessary clarifying questions in the office and accidentally quoting my own articles when talking about Warwick. Also, a huge thanks to Ruby for encouraging me to run for the position and for everything she did to revitalise the section.
I must also mention the rest of the team. It’s been amazing to work with such a talented and fun exec, and I’m sure everyone will go on to do fantastic things in journalism and beyond! I’m so lucky to have had this opportunity, and I wish the exec and my successor the best of luck for the future.
Gabrielle Welch – Features Editor
Having been Features Editor for two tenures, I’m grateful for the opportunity to platform student-led narratives. My hope for the section has always been to encourage our writers to get their hands dirty: to chase issues that matter to them, conduct thoughtful interviews, and wrestle with complexity. I’m excited to see how Features continues to grow.
Thank you to our Senior Team for your dedication to keeping the wider machine of The Boar running smoothly. Thank you to Odette, our brilliantly on-the-ball subeditor, for your patience – especially in the face of last-minute submissions. And thank you to our team of deputies, Annam, Che, Olmo and Aaheli. It’s been a joy to trade article concepts with you. I hope Features has given you the space to explore the kinds of storytelling you want to see in print.
Lex Gillard – Finance Editor
In a manner befitting myself and my strict adherence to the Warwick hour, I am writing this late. The Finance section has been an amazing home to me over the last two years, from starting as a Deputy Editor to becoming an Editor who has pitched everything under the sun. I have to say running this section has been a great experience, but meeting everyone else is what has really made this. Being taught by the brilliant Abhay, the Finance Editor in first year, to running the ship myself has been a journey. I feel it is only fitting to credit my amazing deputy editors, James Koh and Sonali Deshpande, and my subeditor, Emma Netherway, who have made this role ten times easier: they are, without a shadow of a doubt, the best team in The Boar. I have to say my hiring skills are something special, not to sound cocky or anything. From meeting the Career Ladder guy in the Oculus bathroom, to drinking an ungodly amount of purple, being Finance Editor has been a great experience, and I would recommend it to everyone… especially for the purposes of it looking good on your LinkedIn profile.
Zahra Jazmina – Lifestyle Editor
How do you define a section called Lifestyle? Its all-encompassing nature is quite daunting, and its pink theme balances between mean-girl and the sweetest person you know. At times, it felt like being dragged across a field by a boar with far more enthusiasm than you. Still, I quickly learnt to accept the unpredictability and embrace blind optimism. So what if I spent a whole layup session petting and complimenting a computer just to make it run faster? It’s part of the job.
That same openness – to experiment, question, and be personal – defined what made Lifestyle unique, a spirit supported by talented writers and columnists. It has been a privilege to shape it alongside my deputies, Hannah and Ella, who wordlessly had my back at every step, and our wonderful sub-editor, Samah, who stayed unflinching through the late-night Slack messages. It’s been a truly invaluable year, and what a privilege to have it immortalised on paper
Hannah Colechin – Travel Editor
Has it really been a whole year since I became Travel Editor? Time really does fly when you’re having fun. Do I still ask at least one question about InDesign every layup session? Yes, I do.
I do love me some statistics, so here’s a quick roundup you’ll probably skip over: I’ve almost hit 100 travel articles edited, hosted two competitions that brought in over 50 submissions, and our Instagram has posted nearly 50 Country Profiles and 12 Destinations of the Month. Our wonderful columnist contributed nine pieces to the section, and we came up with over 100 unique travel pitches (with an acceptable claim rate of 49%).
Numbers aside (I’m an arts student I swear), I’ve genuinely loved contributing to The Boar. Thanks to everyone behind the scenes, my wonderful travel team, and all our writers; you’ve made it the most welcoming society on campus. Special shoutout to my Grandad for sending me his own articles for inspiration. The writing gene must run in the family.
Veeraja Kamthe – Books Editor
I came to university as an enthusiastic lover of the arts, exploiting all the new resources and opportunities available to me here. However, with each term, I felt myself getting sucked into a world of jobs, sad corporate dreams, and spreadsheets. For my final year, I wanted to return to my roots by intentionally dedicating my time and energy to what I knew would never fail to get me excited – books. I loved reflecting my personal curiosities and ponderings into article prompts, the satisfaction of seeing them be executed by talented writers and learning something new with each article, having the physical manifestation of hours of labour, thought, and intention in my hands to admire in prints… I am so grateful to have met this welcoming and passionate community. My time at The Boar has meant a lot, giving me the opportunity and support to explore my passions and creativity fully.
Emma Willock – Arts Editor
It has been a pleasure to be a co-Editor of the Arts section for the last year. Although our occasionally temperamental software, InDesign, required patience and I plan to take an extended break from Wikimedia Commons after graduation, running the Arts section with Emilia has been a joy! I feel very lucky to have edited so many fabulous articles, I have learned a lot about the various facets of the Arts from you all. I want to say a huge thank you to my brilliant deputy editors, Sofia and Isabella, their support and talent is much appreciated, and to our sub-editor, Adam, thank you for sub-editing lots of last-minute reviews! A final thank you to the dedicated Operations Team for all your help. I have really enjoyed my time as Arts co-editor, and I am looking forward to seeing what the future of the Arts section holds.
Emilia Sullivan – Arts Editor
Thank you to the Arts team: Emma, Isabella, Sofia, Adam. I am so proud of us and the section we have run this year! Thank you to Abigail for taking me on as a deputy back in the day. And, thank you to our writers – the section wouldn’t be what it is without you talented lot of reporters, critics, poets, and storytellers.
I have always felt so humbled by the dedication of everyone on the entire exec team. This year, I have undoubtably worked alongside some of the future’s best journalists and editors and I can’t wait to see what everyone gets up to next.
Every so often, I wonder when the time will come to give up on the creative stuff and pursue something more sensible. But we’re not there yet! This role has fuelled my bravery to chase a career in the Arts, and I am so grateful for that.
Helen Trappelides – Film Editor
I initially applied to The Boar because, quite frankly, the CV was blank, I constantly procrastinated my university work by watching films in first year, and I study English. So, putting all these elements together, I thought ‘Why don’t I go for Deputy Film Editor?’. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this society, progressing from a shy Film Deputy to more than loud enough Editor. Some of my fellow exec may say that watching me crash out every single layup was a real-life horror movie… I’m still convinced Office 2’s computers have it out for me.
A huge thank you to everyone in the exec for always being so kind, helpful and for reminding me to be more organised! It has been fantastic to work alongside all of you, especially my deputies Gemma and Sam. I will now retire to my room to watch Netflix and possibly revive my Letterboxd.
Anya Mittal – TV Editor
I can’t believe I’m already saying goodbye to being TV editor. It feels like just yesterday I was a deputy, accidentally deleting our page during layup and forgetting to press save on WordPress. After six layups as TV editor, I can proudly say nothing has changed!
My deps, Emily and George, have been amazing to work with this past year, and I’m so thankful for Mia, our sub-editor, who’s put up with countless last-minute articles and embarrassing typos.
This year has been so much fun, whether it’s collectively freaking out in Office Two or trying (and failing) to down a pint in circle. I couldn’t be more grateful for this experience and the friends I’ve made in The Boar, and I will miss it all a little bit too much. I wish nothing but the best for the next exec and hope they have as much fun as I did!
Jack Thompson – Music Editor
The Music section was the first section I wrote for, and it’s a “full circle” moment to be able to say goodbye to The Boar as Music Editor. Between my first article and this elected position, I’ve been a writer, a lifestyle columnist, and a communications deputy. It’s truly been an education.
The music section has been an escape from the daunting deadlines that my degree poses against me, and in this escape, we’ve done some wonderful work. As a section, we’ve increased interview output by over 200%, ranging from established artists to student bands. We’ve also arranged an array of gig reviews and had some successful (and unsuccessful) lay-ups.
I’ve been lucky enough to be able to have such a hardworking team, notably my deputies Luca Beech and Amelia Farmer, as well as our sub-editor Lucy Gibbons, of which all their contributions were of paramount importance for the success of our section!
Gabriela Jozefowicz – Games Editor
Being with The Boar and the Games section for over two years has truly been a highlight of my university experience. I got to work with a great team and work on fantastic articles from a range of writers. I’m thankful that I got to stick with the section even while being on my year abroad and trying to figure out how to get as many free trials of InDesign as possible. Games is one of those sections that went hand in hand for my passion of game design and narrative writing, making it such an important project. I will miss writing in-depth game reviews and getting to rant about my favourite games. One of the things that the section worked on the hardest was to break down negative connotations around ‘gamers’ and this is something I will continue to do even when I am no longer the Editor. GG.
Beth Sirianni – Podcasts Editor
I can’t believe I’m already saying bye to The Boar, but they do say time flies when you’re having fun. When I took a leap of faith last April and went from a floating Warwick student in the ether, to editor of the Podcasts section with no prior experience, I definitely felt like an imposter but a year on and I have felt so welcomed by so many genuine people. Watching the section flourish has been a thing of great pride for me. I want to take the time to thank my wonderful deps Rebecca and Mihir and my incredible sub-editor Zahra for helping me every step of the way, diving in headfirst and helping me curate my vision for the section, which is the future of digital media. I can’t wait to see more people write and create for Podcasts. Thank you to everyone in the society for making my final year a hell of a lot more exciting.
I’ve been permitted a few more words for the website, so I’ll continue rambling a little. I want to thank all the people who have now become firm friends and people I look up to, I really hope you achieve all your dreams, and I can’t wait to support you as you do just that! To everyone who took a leap of faith with me and supported me in this role, I appreciate you, thank you for helping me to believe in myself, thank you for taking my pitches, repeatedly helping me in lay-up, cheering with me when my article was shortlisted for SPANC26 (still don’t know how) and helping me to grow Podcasts as a section (130% output increase I see you, 144% writer increase I also see you – hell yeah!). I’ve enjoyed every new challenge, from launching Hogging the Mic to grappling with the most frustrating computers in the world for lay-up. My biggest take away will be all the laughs we’ve shared together, all the wins and the joy of being a part of something so meaningful. To everyone reading, if you have the chance to get involved, don’t hesitate! I regret not joining earlier but I’m grateful for the time I got.
Georgia Carwardine – SciTech Editor
Being part of The Boar was never part of my university plan. I didn’t join until November 2024, and I could’ve never predicted I would be where I am today. I’ve discovered a real passion for journalism, and it has been the greatest honour to bring the SciTech section back from the brink of extinction, all the way to being shortlisted for the Best Science Section by the SPA. It’s a painful thought, letting SciTech go. The section feels like my baby after all, but I know it’s time to step back. My time as an editor has changed me for the better and done wonders for my confidence, but it’s not over just yet! There is still the Whole Hog to complete and an SPA award to win! So, thank you to The Boar for the circles, the pitching, and the layup crash-outs, I’ve had the time of my life!
Oh, one final message to my brilliant team: I hope we can keep playing scrabble together, even when I’m no longer on the team! I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to work with this year.
Cianan Sheekey – Climate Editor
Despite my longer stint as a Deputy Sub-Editor, the looming end of my tenure as Climate Editor makes me feel like a Tory housing minister. Not because I’m useless, though there may be dissenting opinions on that front, but because I’m in the door one minute, enjoying my own metaphorical desk, and then out the next (and subsequently coming back in depending on if elections go as planned). Still, it’s been a blast: I’ve edited an ungodly number of articles, penned a whole lot more, masterminded a remarkably consistent column, and been insulted by Rootes Debauchery. It certainly could have been worse.
In terms of thanks, there are too many good eggs who deserve an ode of praise. Narrowing it down, however, I have to thank Ben for bringing me on board, Avneet for being a superb Deputy Climate Editor, and Ruby for laying the foundations of our esteemed section.
Megan Green – Sport Editor
When I first got to university 18 months ago, I would have never imagined that I would be here today writing at the end of my term as the Sport Editor. Walking up to The Boar’s stand at the societies fair seems so long ago, and yet the time has flown. From applying to be a Sport Deputy last September (I have to thank my friend Hannah for this, otherwise I definitely wouldn’t have applied) to sitting through elections this time last year, it has been an absolute rollercoaster (please excuse the cliché).
I have absolutely loved my time as Sport Editor and would also like to thank the rest of my lovely sport team who have been so unbelievably helpful during my many stressful moments this year! I am so grateful for the many wonderful opportunities I have had presented to me as part of my time at the section, the absolute highlight being getting to interview Guenther Steiner at the Warwick Arts Centre just a few weeks after staring university! I can’t wait to see what The Boar has in store for me next, during my year abroad, and beyond! My next challenge will certainly be to get my head down and get closer to achieving the Whole Hog!
