Basta’s performance at Luzhniki Stadium: A masterclass in audience participation
Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, 29 August 2026
Despite the weather turning cold, artists continue to stage sold-out, complex world tours. While most people excitedly attend Noah Kahan’s The Great Divide and Olivia Rodrigo’s Unravelled tours, Moscow welcomes the start of autumn with Basta’s energetic three-day musical showcase.
At Luzhniki, Russia’s largest football stadium, which seats about 80,000 people, Basta, Vasily Vakulenko, performed three sold-out nights with a variety of special appearances and surprise announcements. Known as a singer, producer, and radio host, his music ranges from rap and hip-hop to rock, with his most popular songs ‘На заре (At Dawn)’, ‘Сансара (Samsara)’ and ‘Выпускной (Медлячок) (Prom (Slow Dance))’. His concerts are always a wildly anticipated event in Moscow, with the venue filling to maximum capacity every night.
Over the three days, he invited a total of sixteen different acts to perform on stage with him
The first night features an 18+ performance with his co-headliner GUF, another Russian rapper; however, the following two nights were open to all ages. Over the three days, he invites a total of sixteen different acts to perform on stage with him, ranging in different genres, styles, and generations. I was lucky to attend the second night, where eleven of these artists featured, including Polina Gagarina, a famous actress, singer, and songwriter, ICEGERGERT, a prominent Russian hip-hop artist, and many others.
The concert features a simple set design consisting of flashing background lights and a large stage on which stood a full band and background vocalists. This choice works effectively to highlight the array of artists and the live band which receive a solo in almost every song. Alexandra Mostovyak, the primary backing vocalist, known from her participation in The Voice Russia, effectively balances Basta’s distinctive vocals with her soulful singing.
However, what really makes this concert stand out is the amount of audience participation that went into the show itself. Lasting approximately three hours, the set is interrupted for a multitude of reasons. The first segment finishes off with two couples being invited onto the stage for a gender reveal and both left with the happy knowledge that they would be expecting boys! Basta followed with an emotional speech on becoming a parent himself, dedicating the next song to his daughters.
Armed with engagement rings, Basta took to the floor seeking out overly excited young men hoping to propose
However, the excitement didn’t end there, as around the halfway point in the show a prior organised couple was once again brought on stage, this time for an engagement! While engagements, or kiss cams, which this show also features, are not uncommon at concerts, what is surprising is the number of couples that had come prepared to get engaged. Armed with engagement rings, Basta takes to the floor seeking out overly excited young men hoping to propose. For me, one of the most entertaining moments of the night is when a couple approached with the question: “How long have you been seeing each other?”, eagerly responding, “Nearly a year!” With a total of three proposals, one might ask: was this a case of wanting to be engaged or rather wanting to propose at the concert of your favourite artist?
Basta also doesn’t shy away from promoting his future projects and existing partnerships such as Yandex Music, the Russian equivalent of Spotify, where he displayed the lyrics of a complex and fast-paced rap. He expertly led the crowd on, believing he was going to perform one of his best-known songs, ‘Выпускной (Медлячок) (Prom (Slow Dance))’, only to reveal a new film trailer for BASTA: Nachalo Igry (Basta: The Beginning of the Game). Slava Kopeykin will be playing Basta as the film focuses on his early life and career, in which he wrote ‘Выпускной (Медлячок)’, further surprising the audience by bringing Kopeykin on stage to sing a duet!
The concert finishes with a performance of his most famous heartfelt songs, to which the crowd did not hesitate to sing along too. The whole stadium lit up as thousands of flashlights swayed along with the performance on stage. For three nights, Luzhniki was transformed into more than a stadium; it was a space for music and celebration, demonstrating the power of music to bring people together.
