Warwick clubs and societies raise thousands for chosen charities

Student clubs and societies across the University have pledged and raised thousands of pounds for charity this academic year, organising events and festivals to give back to a variety of causes.

A few student societies got in touch with The Boar to discuss their achievements this year.

Warwick Canoe and Canoe Polo Club has raised £1,261 for the Paddle Trust, a UK-wide charity supporting the Clear Access Clear Waters campaign for fair, sustainable open access on waterways.

The club held a 24-hour ‘paddleathon’ on Wednesday 25 February to Thursday 26 February 2026 in memory of Warwick paddler Alistair Brown, who was a “much-loved member of [the] community”, as the club shared with The Boar.

Alex Bond, Warwick Canoe and Polo President 2025/6 said the paddleathon aimed to: “continue his legacy by raising funds in his honour, ensuring the values he stood for live on.”

The paddleathon drew support from students leaving the University’s POP! club night, with many stopping to cheer on the participants, including a student in an inflatable dinosaur costume.

Saphire Brown, Charities Officer at Warwick Canoe and Canoe Polo Club, told the Paddle Trust: “It was great to see just how supportive our community is.”

In a separate fundraising effort, Warwick Real Ale Society has pledged £6,000 to charity following a record-breaking profit at its annual beer festival, which was held in the Copper Rooms in Term 2, Week 6.

The society has pledged £5,000 to Myton Hospice, a local Warwickshire charity, and £1,000 to Leamington Spa-based Neuroendocrine Cancer UK.

The festival, the largest student-run beer festival in Europe, has raised money for charity for a number of years running.

Co-chairman of Warwick Real Ale Society, James Freed, told The Boar: “It is incredible that we were so successful this year and it is all down to our sponsors, volunteers, and most importantly the number of attendees that came. Because of them, we are able to meaningfully contribute to local charities.”

In October 2025, Warwick Boat Club held an annual 48-hour rowing event in the Piazza which raised £1,413 for Breast Cancer Now and £605 for the club itself.

Boat Club also elaborated on their charity efforts for Movember this year, an initiative that many other sports club partook in. Movember focuses on men’s health, including suicide prevention and prostate cancer awareness.

Men’s Cricket raised the most out of any other sports society for Movember, totalling £7,539 altogether. Men’s Hockey also broke the £7,000 mark, raising £7,090 in total.

RAW Student Radio has raised just over £900 for Mermaids, one of the UK’s leading charities for trans and non-binary youth, through its annual charity week in Term 1, Week 7.

The station organised a 72-hour broadcast, during which members remained live on air for three days.

The broadcast included three overnight sessions, with members camping in the studio from 9pm to 9am completing challenges set by listeners who donated. The challenges ranged from on-air karaoke to rap battles.

Saarah Hafiji, Co-Station Manager of RAW, told The Boar: “We are incredibly proud of everyone who got involved and grateful to those who donated. It is such an important cause to support, and we are honoured to have been able to do our part.”

Thank you to Warwick Canoe and Canoe Polo, Real Ale, the Boat Club, and RAW for sharing your efforts with The Boar.
