Tokyo 2020: Bryony Page wins trampolining bronze

Team GB’s medal rush continued in the women’s trampolining, as Bryony Page won bronze.

The athlete performed an impressive routine to score 55.735, leading the event with two performances to go, definitely securing her a medal. The next routine, by China’s Zhu Xueying, scored 56.635 and won her the gold – she was then followed by compatriot Liu Lingling, who took the silver after scoring 56.350.

Page won a surprise silver in Rio 2016, and was then out of action for two years after undergoing two ankle operations.

After the event, Page said: “It’s amazing. I hoped I could do it and I put a bit of pressure on myself about it. The first surgery didn’t solve the [ankle] injury so I had to go in again. My second surgery caused a bit of nerve damage and that put some doubt in my mind about whether I could get back on the trampoline.

“My foot is still not fully healed but I was so grateful to be back doing what I love and tried to get back to the standard I was in Rio, and then pushing on. I might not have shown my very best today but it was the best I could have done.”

Her coach Paul Greaves added: “I’m so proud of her. She had two operations and it was a long recovery. For a big part of a year, she was actually doing all the skills off her back. She couldn’t jump on her feet, so to overcome that and come back and secure a medal is just phenomenal.”

The men’s trampolining will take place on Saturday.
