Why you should join… Triathlon & Road Cycling (UoWTRCC)

In the first piece of our new “Why you should join” series, the University of Warwick Triathlon & Road Cycling Club (UoWTRCC) give us an insight into what they do.

Inclusive

Whether you join as an experienced competitor or a complete beginner, UoWTRCC is open and welcoming to all. We have a number of elite-level racers in road cycling and triathlon, along with several members who turned up and discovered a new passion. What’s more, the club’s various sporting components offer unique opportunities for those wanting to mix up their training: you might be a swimmer who wants to improve at running, or a cyclist intrigued by the pool during off-season. With the ‘Splash & Dash’ aquathlon series, a 10km swim challenge and Varsity clashes with Coventry University, there is always something exciting on the horizon. We build a community that connects our different sports together and makes training fun.

Competitive

UoWTRCC is extremely supportive of those who want to compete and succeed at a high level. We send bigger teams to BUCS events each year and regularly organise trips to local duathlons and sportives. The club has made a habit of finishing with medals and Top 20 placings in some of the country’s most prestigious student cycling races. These days out are made so enjoyable because of our team environment; the best moments often occur in the minibus hours before any racing starts. Just make sure someone trustworthy is in charge of the AUX lead.

Social

We’re a friendly club too, with many members here to keep fit and have fun. UoWTRCC regularly organises entertaining POP circles, meals and nights out where we meet up without goggles or lycra. Weekly group rides, swimming and running sets make training itself feel social and help us refresh our minds from studying. What’s more, our summers are marked by beers after open water swimming, long cafe rides and cake-propelled time trials. The club takes you outside of the uni bubble: one of my favourite socials is our annual trip to the Revolution track cycling championships in London. This year we ran our first Triathlon training camp, and our cyclists love touring places like Croatia, Spain and France in the holidays.

UoWTRCC offers something for everyone. There’s space for freshers, current students and new postgraduates to all have fun and enjoy sporting success in the club. Apart from that, if you’re looking to get BUCS medals, multi-sport events such as triathlons and duathlons may be a good place to start.
