BREAKING: SU building evacuated due to fire

The Students’ Union (SU) building was just evacuated after a fire alarm went off.

There were reports of a burning smell on the ground floor of the SU building, with the fire alarm going off at approximately 6pm. Security came to the scene, and the fire brigade was called as well.

SU staff confirmed a fire was identified in the building, but it is as of yet unclear what caused it. It is not known how long the building will remain closed, depending on whether or not the fire brigade judges it safe to let people back in.

Yesterday March 1, the library building was also evacuated after the fire alarm went off, reopening the next day.

The arts centre was also evacuated after an electrical fire on February 12, with the social sciences building also closed down for the day.

The University has been contacted for more information and the story will be updated as it develops.

Update: People are now being allowed to reenter the building. A small fire on the ground floor of SUHQ has now been extinguished.
