OWW Fashion Show Sneak Preview

Suddenly it’s only one week to go until one of Warwick’s biggest nights on campus. The models are rehearsing, the costumes are almost ready, the co-ordinators are losing sleep.

The theme of this year’s show is ‘Still We Rise’… the idea of emerging from the ashes. The title is based on the poem by Maya Angelou “Still I Rise” It will focus on regeneration and revival from the destruction that has gone before, based on the idea that 2012 is supposed to mark the end of the world in New Age beliefs. With the help of the various cultures, we will rebuild the world, and such cultures will be on glorious display at the Fashion Show.

Preparation began way back in June when the OWW committee were selected, so the Fashion Show marks the start of a week created by the hard work of hundreds of Warwick students over the last six months.

It will be held from 7.30-10.30 in the Butterworth Hall next Saturday evening. Although VIP tickets have now sold out, you can still buy tickets from the Arts Centre Box Office and be a part of one of this year’s most memorable events.

Jennifer McGeever, one of the two Fashion Show co-ordinators, says that all is going well in the planning stages, though she warns me that hanging around backstage next Saturday night could prove lethal as it will be hectic, with models and designers battering their way around to get everything ready on time.

Natasha Clark, head of OWW public relations, commented that she was astounded at just how successively an event like OWW can be put together in six months, and was impressed by the levels of dedication shown by all members of the team she was part of.

The clothes this year are being sponsored by Wish Want Wear (www.wishwantwear.com) thus providing a thorough range of items and prints for the designers to play around with. Shortly before going to print, it was announced that the make-up brand No 7 had agreed to sponsor make-up for the show, and so come Saturday each of the models will be treated to the pampering of a No 7 artist.

Having secured myself a fantastic front row seat, I now eagerly anticipate what promises to be a night of innovation, creativity and inspiration. Here’s hoping that none of the models take a nosedive on the runway.
