Court case begins for hit-and-run cop

The court case for an off-duty police officer who struck and killed a Warwick student has begun.

Raymond Cheung was struck by the chief inspector in a hit-and-run incident, leaving the victim’s blood on his car’s shattered windscreen, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard. The collision occurred on 8th March, 2009, while officer Jamie Jones, 38, was driving at around sixty miles per hour on the A45. The court was told that parts of Jones’ damaged car were found near the location where the final-year Engineering undergraduate was killed. Cheung’s body was subsequently hit again by a second vehicle.

Jones is being charged with misconduct in a public office, failing to stop at the scene and dangerous driving. The Coventry Telegraph reports that the court heard that 20-year-old Cheung had recently had a “falling out” with a female student, and that he may have walked into the traffic on purpose.
