New train station could be built between Kenilworth and Coventry

A new train station could be built between Kenilworth and Coventry stations to better serve the University of Warwick.

It would also serve new local housing developments, including thousands of homes at King’s Hill.

The new station is among a number of proposals being considered to upgrade rail services in Warwickshire, in order to coincide with the arrival of HS2.

Plans involve extending services from the ‘north-south corridor’ through to the East Midlands and Thames Valley. This includes Coventry and Leamington station and also stops at Oxford, Reading and Nottingham.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is looking at improving the rail network between 2020 and 2034 under a new rail strategy. It claims the updates will benefit businesses and the approximately 10 million passengers who travel on local train lines each year.

According to the Rail Strategy report: “WCC will investigate the provision of a new strategic multi modal station, located between the Kenilworth and Coventry stations. The provision of such a facility will provide strategic and local connectivity to the University of Warwick and planned development in the surrounding area.

“WCC aspires for the new University of Warwick station to offer a strategic rail service, providing direct rail connectivity to key destinations. The delivery of this station may require the provision of addition rail capacity between Coventry and Leamington.”

The Rail Strategy report adds that the train station would be built between 2026-2033 if the plans are approved. WCC commented that funding for the station would come from bids to government, and ‘innovative ways’ of securing money without using council funds.

Other suggested proposals include an upgrade to the Stoneleigh A46 roundabout, and the construction of a second station close to the M1, Junction 18.

The strategy has been approved by councillors to go to public consultation, and is expected to reach the cabinet for approval in December.
