Team Warwick in Action: A quieter week for BUCS but still plenty to celebrate

It may have been a quieter week on the BUCS calendar, with several clubs taking a break from competition, but there was still plenty happening across Team Warwick. While some sides continued their league campaigns, others made their first appearances of the season, and a number took to the pitch for the beginning of their National Cup fixtures. Take a look at some of the highlight of Week 4.

American Football

Warwick Wolves made an impressive start to their season, securing a 23-8 victory over SGS American Football Team.

Badminton

Warwick’s Men’s 1s continued their outstanding form, recording another emphatic 8-0 victory, this time against Edinburgh Men’s 1s. It was their third 8-0 win of the season, underlining just how dominant the side has been in the opening weeks of BUCS.

The women’s teams faced tougher contests. The Women’s 2s lost 6-2 to Nottingham Women’s 3s, while the Women’s 3s were narrowly beaten 5-3 by Nottingham Women’s 4s.

Dodgeball

It was a busy day for Warwick’s dodgeball teams at the Team Southampton Sports Hall, with the Men’s 1s taking on three opponents.

The side faced a difficult opening match against Birmingham Men’s 1s, losing 20-4, before putting up a closer fight against Portsmouth and Plymouth. Both matches ended in 14-10 defeats, but the Men’s 1s showed signs of improvement across the day.

The Men’s 2s also had two fixtures to contend with. They lost 14-10 to Loughborough Men’s 3s but bounced back in style, securing a convincing 16-4 victory over East Anglia Men’s 2s.

Fencing

Elsewhere in fencing, The Men’s 1s faced one of their toughest home tests of the season against Nottingham Men’s 1s, eventually falling to a 133-105 defeat.

The Women’s 1s, meanwhile, began their official season with a commanding 135-65 victory over Nottingham Women’s 3s. Winning across all three weapons, the team made an excellent start to its campaign and gave Warwick plenty to celebrate.

Football

There was a mixture of cup action and league fixtures for Warwick’s football teams this week.

In the National Cup, the Men’s 1s suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Loughborough Men’s 2s. Warwick’s goal came from Alex Lavery, who bundled the ball in from a corner to score his first BUCS goal.

The Men’s 2s had a much happier afternoon, claiming a 4-1 victory over Nottingham Trent Men’s 4s. With four different goalscorers getting on the scoresheet, it was a strong all-round attacking performance.

The women’s sides had a more difficult week in their respective Women’s Midlands tiers. The Women’s 1s were beaten 4-0 by Derby Women’s 1s, while the Women’s 2s narrowly lost 2-1 to Staffordshire Women’s 1s, with Lily Sharkey netting the sole goal.

Golf

Warwick’s golfers finally had something to celebrate, with the Men’s 1s securing their first win of the season. They produced an excellent performance to beat Nottingham Men’s 2s 5-1, providing a welcome boost as their campaign continues.

Hockey

It was a relatively quiet week for Warwick’s hockey clubs, with only the Men’s 2s taking to the pitch.

The side made its first away trip of the season and returned with a valuable 2-1 victory over Oxford Men’s 3s.

Lacrosse

Warwick’s Men’s 1s faced a difficult test against Nottingham Men’s 1s, losing 27-0 despite putting up a great effort.

Motorsport

Away from the traditional BUCS fixtures, Warwick’s motorsport club took to Sutton Circuit for round one of the Warwick Karting Championship.

There were three different winners across the finals, with Charlie Ephgrave taking Final A, Ralf Jungling winning Final B after a photo finish with Sean Johnstone, and Mangalam Vijla claiming Final C.

There was further success for Ephgrave, who topped the PRO podium with 20 points. Johnstone led the AM standings with 21 points, rounding off an exciting opening round of the championship.

Squash

Warwick’s squash teams enjoyed a particularly successful week, with the Women’s 1s and Men’s 1s both recording clean sweeps.

The Women’s 1s swept aside Loughborough Women’s 3s in a 4-0 win, with every Warwick player securing an individual 3-0 victory. The Women’s 2s and Women’s 3s also put in competitive performances, both drawing 2-2 against Nottingham Women’s 3s and Nottingham Women’s 4s respectively.

The Men’s 1s continued the winning trend, defeating Oxford Men’s 1s 5-0 in a dominant display. The Men’s 5s narrowly missed out on another victory, losing 2-1 to Nottingham Men’s 5s.

Tennis

Warwick’s tennis teams were involved in a series of closely contested fixtures, with three matches ending in 3-3 draws.

The Men’s 1s shared the points with Loughborough Men’s 5s, while the Men’s 2s also drew 3-3 against Nottingham Trent Men’s 2s. The Women’s 1s matched those results, drawing 3-3 against Birmingham Women’s 1s in their fixture.

There was a clear winner in the women’s FAST4 fixture, however, as Warwick’s Women’s FAST4 2s secured an impressive 5-1 victory over Coventry Women’s FAST4 1s.

It was a tough week for Warwick’s volleyball teams, with both the men’s and women’s sides facing Loughborough opposition.

The Women’s 2s lost 3-1 to Loughborough Women’s 2s, while the Men’s 2s were beaten 3-0 by Loughborough Men’s 2s. Both teams will be looking to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
