Team Warwick in Action: Making waves in the pool and dominating on the court

BUCS (British University and College Sports) action continued across Warwick’s sporting clubs this week. With several teams beginning their campaigns and others building on their early-season form, here is how Team Warwick got on.

Badminton

Warwick’s men’s badminton teams enjoyed a superb week, with all three sides recording emphatic 8-0 victories. The Men’s 1s defeated Manchester Men’s 1s, the Men’s 2s beat Oxford Men’s 2s, and the Men’s 3s completed the clean sweep with a win over Aston Men’s 1s.

The women’s sides faced tougher tests. The Women’s 1s were beaten 8-0 by Loughborough Women’s 3s, while the Women’s 2s narrowly lost 5-3 to Coventry Women’s 1s. The Women’s 3s also fell to an 8-0 defeat against Birmingham Women’s 2s.

Elsewhere in Nottingham, the Women’s 1s lost 88-48 in a hard-fought battle against Nottingham Trent Women’s 1s.

Fencing

Warwick’s had plenty to celebrate on home ground, defeating Edinburgh Men’s 1s 133-93 at Westwood Games Hall. It was a convincing result for the team and a strong performance in front of the home crowd.

Football

The Men’s 1s endured a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Loughborough Men’s 2s. Despite Loughborough receiving a red card, an unfortunate own goal proved decisive. The Men’s 2s had a happier afternoon, earning a 3-1 away victory over Birmingham Men’s 3s.

There was little to separate the Men’s 3s and Anglia Ruskin Men’s 1s, with the sides playing out a goalless draw. The Men’s 4s were involved in an equally tight encounter, sharing six goals with Worcester Men’s 2s in a 3-3 draw. Nael Wargui struck twice, while Jesse Marshall added Warwick’s third.

In the women’s competition, three of Warwick’s four sides began their seasons, joining the Women’s 3s in action. The Women’s 1s made an excellent start, cruising to a 7-0 away victory over Nottingham Trent Women’s 3s. The Women’s 3s also came away with a win, edging Birmingham Women’s 5s 1-0.

The Women’s 2s faced a difficult test against Oxford Women’s 2s, losing 6-0, while the Women’s 4s were beaten 9-1 by Coventry Women’s 1s.

Golf

There was individual recognition, too. Amma Khan claimed the women’s attacking MVP award, while Felicia Austin was named defensive MVP. On the men’s side, Elio Keenan took the attacking award, with Tim Kuestner recognised as defensive MVP.

Korfball

Warwick’s korfball team could hardly have asked for a more dramatic start to its season. In its first fixture, Warwick edged Birmingham 13-12 in a nail-biting contest.

After taking an early lead, Warwick came under pressure as Birmingham fought its way back into the game. A late flurry of goals and a composed penalty in the closing stages ultimately made the difference, sealing a one-point victory. It was a promising start for Warwick, who held their nerve when it mattered most.

Lacrosse

It was a challenging week for Warwick’s men’s lacrosse teams. The Men’s 1s suffered a 21-0 away defeat to Nottingham Trent Men’s 1s, while the Men’s 2s lost 11-0 to Leicester Men’s 1s.

Netball

The Women’s 1s came through a close contest against Birmingham Women’s 5s, securing a 45-40 victory. Sasha Branch was a standout performer, receiving recognition as both the opposition’s Player of the Match and Players’ Player.

The Women’s 3s also found themselves in a closely fought battle of Woxbridge, drawing 36-36 with Oxford Women’s 3s. Neither side could find a decisive advantage, and the points were shared after an evenly matched contest.

Swimming

Warwick’s swimmers made a strong start to their British University Swimming League (BUSL) campaign, beating Cardiff 48-30 in their first week of competition.

The team recorded an impressive 18 wins against just four losses across the individual events, helping Warwick secure a comfortable overall victory. It was an encouraging opening performance as the team begins its league campaign.

Water Polo

Warwick’s water polo teams made waves this week, with both the men’s and women’s sides picking up away victories.

The Men’s 1s edged Birmingham 13-11 in a competitive encounter, holding on to secure a two-goal win. The Women’s 1s went a step further, producing one of the most emphatic results of the week with a 30-1 demolition of Leicester.

The Women’s 1s lost 3-1 to Nottingham Women’s 2s, but Izzy Beynon Cobb provided a bright spot with a 3-0 individual victory as first seed, making an impressive return after injury last year.

The Women’s 2s and Women’s 3s both played out 2-2 draws against Oxford Women’s 1s and Oxford Women’s 2s respectively, ensuring the points were shared in both fixtures.

Table Tennis

Warwick’s first home BUCS table tennis fixtures brought contrasting fortunes for the men’s and women’s teams.

The Men’s 1s had a difficult outing against Nottingham Trent Men’s 1s, losing 16-1. The Men’s 2s, however, turned things around with an impressive 12-5 victory over Loughborough Men’s 1s.

The Women’s 1s had a particularly busy day, playing twice. They began with a 3-2 win over Birmingham Women’s 2s before narrowly losing 3-2 to Birmingham Women’s 1s in their second match. Despite the split results, the opening victory gave the team something to celebrate on home ground.

Tennis
