What’s on in Welcome Week at Warwick Student Cinema?

It’s nearly time for another welcome week at the University of Warwick. While this week can involve exploring some societies or even meeting new people, let’s be honest: there’s no better way to spend it than sitting in silence, in a dark room, at Warwick Student Cinema.

For those unaware, Warwick Student Cinema (WSC for short) is a student-run, professional cinema located in the science block, screening everything from exciting new releases to ground-breaking classics across six days of the week. But during Welcome Week (26 September to 4 October), things are a little different, so let’s take a look at what’s in store this year… 

Sunday 27 September

To begin the festivities, Sunday offers three screenings of Project Hail Mary. It’s a story of blossoming friendships in an uncertain environment… is there a more perfect film for those beginning their university experience? Beyond its resonance, however, the film is a tour de force for Ryan Gosling and boasts astonishing visuals. So, whether it’s your first or 500th night on Warwick’s campus, WSC has you sorted with the biggest release of 2026. 

But the excitement only starts there, as from Monday onwards, three unique films are screened each day.

Monday 28 September

Fun-filled animated romp Minions & Monsters is first up while another of the year’s biggest releases, Obsession, closes out the day. It features a jaw-dropping performance from Inde Navarrette and is a triumph for young, burgeoning talent in the film industry.

In between, however, is a particularly exciting screening: 2005’s Pride and Prejudice on 35mm film. At WSC, films are screened not only digitally but also on physical 35mm and 70mm film, and the autumnal colour palette of Pride and Prejudice will amaze on this format. 

Tuesday 29 September

On Tuesday, Toy Story 5 is up first. Even if – like me – you believe the Toy Story franchise should have ended two films ago, this screening promises to be a nostalgic, mid-afternoon screening at WSC. Steven Spielberg’s latest film, Disclosure Day, is next, a sci-fi effort that dynamically explores the impact of extraterrestrial discoveries upon contemporary life. 

And then it’s time for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I watched Edgar Wright’s 2010 classic at WSC during my first year at Warwick and, believe me, the chaos of Scott Pilgrim is a treat through WSC’s screen and sound system. 

Wednesday 30 September

A trio of exciting new releases populates Wednesday’s schedule. There’s The Invite, a new comedy-drama from Booksmart director Olivia Wilde, which is perfect for fans of The Drama. The laughs continue with Jackass: Best and Last – although I must admit to having no interest in this slapstick comedy – before the day is rounded off with Supergirl. Despite receiving a lukewarm reception commercially, Supergirl is early proof that 2026 is a major year for the superhero genre. 

Thursday 1 October

And Thursday is only further proof of that, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day screening in the early evening. Despite the MCU being recently beset with all manner of issues, Brand New Day does suggest that there is still promise in the nearly 20-year-old franchise. Before that, however, there’s cult classic The Devil Wears Prada. With iconic performances from Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, this is another perfect opportunity for a flat outing to the cinema.

Finally, a WSC classic closes Thursday: Pulp Fiction. It may be screened here at Warwick every year, but some things stick for a reason, as Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 sensation is a one-of-a-kind thrill on the big screen.  

Friday 2 October

WSC is nothing if not varied, and Friday has variety in droves. High school comedy Superbad is first up. Beyond its endlessly quotable lines of dialogue and strangely lovable characters, the bittersweet tone of Superbad makes this another ideal screening for the new beginning of welcome week. 

Backrooms follows and, like Obsession, reflects the importance of young talent in contemporary filmmaking with stellar direction from 20-year-old Kane Parsons. Finally, three years after its awards season sweep, Everything Everywhere All at Once returns to WSC. With its truly unique, outlandish visuals, this is, if anything, a film that belongs upon the biggest of screens. 

Saturday 3 October

As always, Welcome Week is going out with a bang at WSC. Back to the Future, one of the most iconic films of the ‘80s, makes for a perfect afternoon viewing (particularly so, amidst the inevitable contraction of the dreaded freshers’ flu).

The visually spectacular Your Name starts Saturday evening, before the week closes with a 70mm screening of Christopher Nolan’s newest film: The Odyssey. With an ensemble cast of A-list performers and visuals from a modern master, there is no better end to the week than this. 

In short, the Welcome Week schedule at Warwick Student Cinema offers something for everyone, from nostalgic favourites, ideal for the nerves that accompany this new beginning, to some of 2026’s most celebrated releases. And that’s just one week – there’s still another ten weeks of cinema to come…
