Considering attending preseason? Warwick sports clubs explain why you shouldn’t miss out

With Welcome Week fast approaching, incoming freshers at the University of Warwick have plenty of ways to get a taste of what’s to come. Among the list of these opportunities is preseason.

Many Warwick sports clubs run preseason training sessions in the weeks leading up to the beginning of term for members and freshers alike, offering those considering participating in competitive sport at university a chance to experience what it entails.

For freshers still unsure about whether preseason is for them, several University of Warwick sports clubs spoke to The Boar Sport about why it’s worth getting involved and how to take part.

Women’s Rugby

Preseason is one of the best ways for freshers to settle into university life, build confidence, and become part of a supportive community from day one. Our club welcomes players of all abilities, whether you’ve been playing for years or have never picked up a rugby ball before. Preseason is designed to help everyone ease in at their own pace, learn new skills, and get to know the team in a friendly, encouraging environment.

Beyond the physical benefits, preseason helps you establish a routine, meet new people, explore campus and feel part of a team straight away. It’s also a great opportunity to understand how the club works, get familiar with coaching styles, and prepare for the competitive season ahead. Although we love our time at training, WWRFC will also be hosting plenty of pre-season socials, which are also welcome to all, even if you don’t want to play rugby with us!

To sign up, simply follow us on Instagram, complete the pre-season form in our bio and join the WhatsApp group chat! If you have any questions, feel free to message us – we’re always happy to help new players get involved.

Women’s Netball

If you’re thinking about trialling for Warwick Women’s Netball, preseason is the best place to start!

Performance preseason runs from the 7th to the 27th, and general preseason runs from the 14th to the 27th. Applications close on the 26th of August for performance and the 1st of September for general.

Preseason gives you a proper chance to get ready for trials. You’ll build up your fitness, work on the technical side of your game, and get a feel for how training actually runs before trials happen. It also means you’re not walking into trials as a complete unknown – you’ll have trained alongside the older years and started to get to know them, which helps on both sides.

There’s a social side too. A lot of freshers end up living with a returner during preseason, and you’ll be invited to socials from the start, so you’re already part of the club before term starts.

Sign up to preseason! We’re so excited to meet all of you x

Men’s Hockey

Preseason is the best way to meet new freshers coming into the university like you, whilst being guided by some more experienced students and getting a taste of what hockey at Warwick is like. It’s an amazing opportunity to make friends, with a good mixture of fun socials (both sober and non-sober) and hockey!

Whether you’ve played hockey for years or you’re completely new to the sport, preseason is a great way to get involved, meet people and settle into university life before term officially starts. It’s also a brilliant opportunity to meet some of your future teammates, build friendships and create lifetime bonds both on and off the pitch. Our experienced players are always happy to help, so there’s no need to worry about coming along on your own.

To sign up, simply fill in the Warwick Men’s Hockey preseason sign-up form in our Instagram bio. We can’t wait to welcome you to the club and hopefully see you on the pitch!

Lacrosse

Lacrosse preseason is the perfect way for freshers to improve their skills, meet others in the sport, and settle into University sport before the term begins. It’s a great opportunity to develop experience and improve technique within the sport, as well as to meet other club members before the start of the BUCS season.

During preseason, we run a wide variety of training and conditioning sessions, targeted at improving your lacrosse skills, fitness, and overall confidence with the sport. We also offer a range of different social events, allowing new members to get to know their teammates and build strong connections ahead of the season.

To sign up, you can fill out the form via the link in our Instagram bio, or contact us directly with any further queries. We hope to see you there!
