The aesthetic playground: Uptown Girl

Since we’ve done downtown girl, it’s time to do its antithesis: the Uptown Girl. It also originated in New York, but that’s where the similarities end. Where the Downtown Girl aesthetic leans into a baggy, casual style, the Uptown Girl focuses on being fashionable in a classy way. In fact, it is incredibly similar to the ‘old money’ look, except the Uptown Girl favours brighter tones while the ‘old money’ remains more subdued. Think Blair Waldorf or Audrey Hepburn. 

The Uptown Girl puts an emphasis on timeless elegance and well-fitting garments. She invests in clothes that transcend fleeting fashion trends instead of following them.

An Uptown Girl will have at least one classic dress that can be relied upon for many occasions – a clean, simple item that has minimal details and is tailored closely to the body’s natural shape without being too tight. The beauty of these types of dresses is that they’re versatile – you could wear them on New Years Eve, at a university ball, or for an evening out dining. It all depends on how you accessorise it. A favourite option of mine for this is & Other Stories, which has a variety of satin slip dresses in multiple colours. These are a great option because the colours are unique without being loud, providing great seasonal variety. Silk, satin, and lace are staples of the Uptown Girl. If you don’t like wearing dresses, consider investing in a silk or lace top to pair with some smart jeans or trousers. Or, you could get two looks in one with this satin blouse featuring lace trims. 

Consider hair accessories to complete the outfit, like a simple headband or a headscarf in neutral colours.
