Victory for Leclerc amidst chaos at Silverstone
The Silverstone GP marked Ferrari’s second victory of the year, following Hamilton’s win at the Barcelona-Catalunya GP, and this race was no less eventful. It also marks LeClerc’s first win since 2024. More importantly, Antonelli’s mechanical failure appears to have blown the title race wide open.
It was anticipated that the race would be smooth sailing for Antonelli, after he won the Sprint so decisively. However, a slow start enabled both Ferraris to pass him off the line. Although he managed to overtake Hamilton for P2, LeClerc only lost the lead when he pitted. After his own pit stop, Antonelli lost the chase for P1 when Lap 41 saw him struggling with car issues. Despite a new front wing for his car, he consequently dropped to P10 after being forced to pit twice more. He received a five-second penalty for track limits, which seems unfair given he was forced to go wide with his steering, losing time rather than gaining an advantage. Hamilton also faced difficulties, but he managed to keep a spot on the podium. To top off his five-second penalty for a false start, he was investigated for failing to slow for a yellow flag on Lap 38. However, he was reprimanded and avoided another penalty since it was determined that he had little time to react, especially considering he had just been battling with Verstappen.
Verstappen’s crash on Lap 48 led to the driver’s furious outburst, swearing at his misfortune as he went from the podium straight into the gravel. He had been chasing Hamilton but came off the corner instead, due to what Laurent Mekies, Red Bull team principal, described as a rear wing that did not fully close, reducing downforce and leading to a loss of control. There was a collective sense of disappointment at the lack of a dramatic final lap once the safety car was sent back in from the track.
Even LeClerc wished that the race had had a normal ending, although he was clearly overjoyed to be celebrating his victory, after starting in 2nd place.
Post-race, the FIA stated that the safety car message “was displayed erroneously due to a software error.”
Russell clung to his position at the end once the safety car was deployed, managing to come in second after staying on the track whilst other drivers pitted. More quietly, Lando Norris secured fourth place for McLaren, greeted at his home race by the fluorescence of fans at the Landostand. After an incident on the first lap, teammate Piastri recovered only to 11th place. Arvin Lindblad, also at his home race, became the youngest British driver ever to score points at Silverstone, and at his debut home race no less.
So, what does the race mean for championship standings? Antonelli’s lead over Russell has been reduced significantly, now 25 points, with Hamilton only a further 7 behind. This places Antonelli in a much more precarious position, meaning that both him and Mercedes will have to be on top form if he is going to clinch the title.
