More than a game: Warwick Women’s Netball supports Pride Sports
As Pride Month begins, the outdoor courts at the University of Warwick Sports Hub are set to become more than just a place for competition.
On June 24, Warwick Women’s Netball Club (UWWNC) will host a mixed charity tournament in support of Pride Sports, bringing together students, societies, and friends for an afternoon of inclusive sport.
Open to everyone, from experienced players to complete beginners, the 7-a-side tournament aims to offer students a fun break from exam season while raising money and awareness for Pride Sports, a UK charity working to tackle homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia in sport and improve LGBTQ+ participation.
Supporting Pride Sports is important to help ‘celebrate everyone for who they truly are’ and find their place in sport
Since its founding in 2006, the organisation has led initiatives such as Football v Homophobia and the Pride Youth Games, while also supporting more than 200 grassroots LGBTQ+ sports clubs across the country. Locally, it works with Coventry Corsairs, an inclusive rugby club committed to creating a safe, judgement-free environment for players of all sexualities.
Because of the charity’s work, UWWNC said supporting Pride Sports is important to help “celebrate everyone for who they truly are” and find their place in sport. After raising £975.5 at last year’s tournament, the club is hoping to build on that success — so why not build a team, buy a ticket, and be part of a fun afternoon helping to make sport more welcoming for everyone?
