How dare she! Taylor Swift at the Knicks game
Taylor Swift has won fourteen grammy’s throughout her career, released twelve albums (not counting her ‘Taylor’s Version’ re-releases); whilst touring her incredibly successful The Eras Tour. Yet, she is being criticised for attending a NBA Finals Game 4, which comes to no surprise as Swift has had a constant stream of haters following her wherever she goes.
Where is this level of criticism for other celebrities?
E! News pointed to Monica McNutt, a Knicks analyst, who rudely critiqued Swift, saying “She’s not a Knicks fan. Get out of here girl.” This arguably quite demeaning comment depicts the wide commentary that already surrounds Swift and her actions.
McNutt released a statement to TMZ where she apologised, saying that she “did not know her Knicks loyalty” and that the two could “be united.” Swift has been a public fan of the Knicks since her arrival in New York and has shown her support for the team, especially in her 1989 era. The outrage from fans in response to this comment is acceptable as there has always been the issue of placing a microscope on Swift, leading us to question: where is this level of criticism for other celebrities?
While her devotion to the Knicks has been a proven fact, therefore diminishing McNutt’s comment, it is still ridiculous for someone who hasn’t proved their status as a Knicks fan to be told that they shouldn’t be there.
This is not the first time that Swift has faced backlash from attending a sports game, this was a recurring theme when she began appearing at Kansas City Chiefs games
Actor Timothée Chalamet has also been a prominent presence at Knicks games and has shown his support very publicly. However, he has received no backlash. Many celebrities attend sport games, and should be allowed to do so. Therefore, it in this article I will outline why many choose to critique and care about Swift’s presence so much.
This is not the first time that Swift has faced backlash from attending a sports game, this was a recurring theme when she began appearing at Kansas City Chiefs games in support of her now-fiance Travis Kelce. For example, in autumn 2023 the NFL received high levels of frustration from fans over their coverage of Swift’s presence at the games. Although, this was an unexpected pop culture moment which helped to spike more interest in these games due to Swift.
There is always going to be commentary surrounding anything Swift does – it is expected in her position of fame
There are two groups of people when it comes to Swift, those who love her (the Swifties) and those who heavily dislike her. Whether that is supporting the Knicks by sitting courtside at a game, or releasing another album, there is always going to be criticism surrounding anything Swift does – it is expected in her position of fame.
The Swiftie fan base is famously known for its girlhood and femininity. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that the Swiftie fandom clashes with the dominated male viewership of sports. Some perceive this conflict as merely just sexist remarks towards Swift, yet, it may bring to light something deeper. This comparison of male to female fandoms highlight how this conflict can become aggressive by undermining Swift by suggesting that she is interfering with the NFL, as seen from the backlash of her supporting her fiance at his games.
Will Swift ever be able to attend a sports game without being told to “Get out of here” or being confronted with a wave of unwelcome behaviour? Probably not, but in typical Swift fashion she will most likely just “shake it off”.
