Warwick formalises sustainability as core strategic goal in governance shift
The University of Warwick is committed to cutting direct greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2030 and 80% by 2035, based on a 2018-19 baseline. This is one of many of Warwick’s continued commitments under its updated Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
The updated strategy builds on Warwick’s 2022 ‘Way to Sustainable’ plan and further emphasises sustainability, making it the University’s fifth strategic goal and an institutional pillar. The refreshed strategy marks a shift from broader, aspirational commitments to a more structured, KPI-driven framework with clearer accountability and governance.
The strategy was created to reflect the diversity of perspectives at Warwick, using a university-wide student survey, a series of listening rooms with academic staff, professionals, and students, and targeted discussions with external stakeholders.
The university is implementing a range of policies as part of its commitment to sustainability, with all laboratories aiming to achieve LEAF accreditation or an equivalent by the end of 2027. LEAF is a UCL-established certification system that provides Warwick’s labs with an auditable, measurable compliance mechanism to increase sustainability. This is particularly important as 2% of global plastic waste is from research labs alone.
As part of their operations, Warwick is also committed to a minimum of 10% year-on-year growth in circular economy activity through to 2030, by reducing resource use, designing out waste, and prioritising re-use and repair.
Furthermore, by 2030, all departments at Warwick will have an active Green Champion, who will help lead and support behaviour change to boost sustainability. There are currently more than 200 staff and postgraduate green champions across over 40 departments.
The University is integrating sustainability into the core of decision-making. Environmental Sustainability Leads will be appointed across all faculties and departments, and all will also have a Sustainability Action Plan by 2028. The Sustainability Committee will oversee this rollout and ensure strategic alignment.
James Varney, VP Democracy and Development, and Helena Ratcliffe, Environment and Ethics Officer, of the Student Union were “pleased to endorse this new Environmental Sustainability Strategy”, with them praising “the advances that Warwick has made, especially in regards to Circular Economy and in including students in the road to a more ethical and sustainable university.”
