Explosive scandals in reality TV: Summer House

Summer is here, metaphorically. Once again, Bravo has not failed to give its audience a truly addictive scandal, this time with the cast of Summer House having taken the spotlight, as a secret romance between Amanda Batula, 34, and West Wilson, 31, was confirmed, (following speculation within the fandom) as the pair released a statement on March 31.

The show first aired in 2017, following a group of friends who holiday in their Hamptons house every summer. Kyle Cooke, 43, has been a member of the show since season one, and started dating Batula on the show, who became a prominent cast member in season two. After their rollercoaster of a marriage, they announced their separation in November 2025 and confirmed their divorce in January. Whilst it seemed that Batula would come out on top after their split, it only took a short amount of time before herself and Wilson confirmed the rumours surrounding their hidden romance, causing yet another mass explosion among Bravo fans.

But what is it that has made this scandal so alluring?

Batula was best friends with Ciara Miller, 30, who had a complex history and relationship with Wilson – making the scandal shocking as she had hurt one of her best friends. However, Batula and Cooke’s relationship was not perfect since Cooke had previously cheated on her and there have been other alleged incidents of him being disloyal. So, why has he not received as much hate?

Bravo fans will never forget ‘the’ scandal which broke the internet in March 2023: Scandoval. News hit that Vanderpump Rules stars Tom Sandoval, 43, and Rachel (Raquell) Leviss, 31, were having an eight month long affair whilst Sandoval was in a ten year long relationship with co-star Ariana Madix, 40. The unforgettable three-part reunion took place less than two months later in May 2023, and the tension could have been cut with a knife. Ultimately, this destructive scandal caused an end to the beloved Vanderpump Rules, as after season eleven aired, the cast struggled to reconcile following this catastrophic event. That was until season twelve premiered in December 2025, featuring a fresh new cast.

At first, Batula was “receiving Madix-level mountains of support”, following her split with Cooke. In spite of this, she now is facing the consequences of the lies and scandal, as fans have turned on her, going so far as to compare her to Sandoval and Leviss, naming the event ‘Amandavol’.

This event has currently taken over the ‘Bravoverse’, but is it as iconic as the Scandoval? We will definitely find out at the Summer House season nine reunion. What we do know is that fans are anticipating a chaotic and eventful reunion.

The eruption of this scandal has turned season nine into a scavenger hunt. Many fans, now turned self-proclaimed detectives, are searching for questionable and suspicious moments between Batula and Wilson. Similarly to Vanderpump Rules season ten, the scandal has taken over the season, drawing the focus onto the pair’s secretive behaviours. If all of this deceit had not happened, Batula would have come out of this season shining, evidenced in her initial support.

Nonetheless there still stands speculation among viewers as it is possible that the show’s editors may have re-edited in order to further villainise the pair, following the scandal’s having broken on the internet. In fact, this was proven true on April 16, as revealed by Andy Cohen, 57, of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, that the team of editors are “cutting” the show.. This is presumably in order to adjust the show’s focus onto Batula and Wilson, as well as their relationships with other cast members. There is no doubt that this is a business move to make the show more enticing for the fans.

However, this intense focus on the pair is also concerning. After Leviss was attacked by both her cast-mates and the internet, she disappeared from the public eye and put herself into a mental health facility. Fans must be careful with what they are posting online, and be mindful of both Wilson’s and Batula’s mental health and wellbeing.

To add to the drama, there has been a leaked audio recording of the reunion which was filmed on April 23rd, and we can already feel the chaos and tension.

Will this scandal take a seat in the Bravo hall of fame? It very well might, as the media and fanbase have been talking non-stop about this shocking scandal since it initially erupted. Now we must patiently wait for the reunion, where more questions will be answered, more intense arguments will emerge, and more jaw-dropping Bravo drama will appear on our screens.
