Reading and Leeds Festival Lineup: could 2026 be the year that trumps them all?

On December 1 2025, six of the headliners were announced for Reading and Leeds Festival 2026. It’s fair to say, this year’s line-up has not disappointed.

Following an iconic Glastonbury performance last summer, Charli xcx is set to make her only British festival appearance for the year as one of the main headliners for the August festival.  Despite ‘Brat summer’ having passed, Reading and Leeds organisers have said that they believe Charli will “usher in a new era” for the image and popularity of the festival when she performs next summer. This statement is especially apt following the release of Charli’s album for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, featuring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie. Charli xcx fans are excited to see her headline the festival, with the female solo-artist being an indisputably excellent feature choice by the Reading and Leeds fest organisers.

Other headliners for the festival include Fontaines D.C., Florence + The Machine, and electronic duo Chase & Status, with these performers also telling fans this will be their only British festival appearance this year. However, Fontaines D.C. have received media attention for “jumping the gun” by telling fans they would be performing at the festival via an Instagram post prior to official information being released.

Organisers have promised an additional feature headline on Thursday 27 August from rock band Kasabian for attendees of Leeds festival only

Solo artist RAYE will also be performing again at Reading and Leeds in 2026. This comes following the success of her headlining act at the festival in 2024 and the release of her (now most listened to) song ‘WHERE THE HELL IS MY HUSBAND!’ last year, which has now reached over 200 million listens on Spotify.   Additionally, organisers have promised an additional feature headline on Thursday 27 August from rock band Kasabian for attendees of Leeds festival only.

Interestingly, this selection of headliners is the first time in 25 years that the most popular performers of the sister festivals have been exclusively comprised of British and Irish acts.  This suggests potentially a growing focus on promoting British talent rather than relying on American performers like in previous years when Blink-182, Lana Del Rey, and Chappell Roan have been headliners.  Other performers like Kneecap, Jade, and Skepta are also among some of the British talents who will be performing alongside American band Geese and Dutch artist DJ Chris Stussy.

The choice specifically to platform Kneecap following the rap group’s controversy surrounding their Glastonbury performance last summer and the British government’s (now dispelled) accusations that the trio were promoting terrorism, shows that Reading and Leeds have decided to stand in solidarity with musicians who openly support Palestine. Moreover, having faced criticism in the past for not platforming enough female performers, this year’s six headliners list features three female artists. Whilst Melvyn Benn has said in the past that it is simply too difficult to find female artists because “there’s just fewer women available to headline”, that is seemingly not the case this year.

Sponsoring the upcoming festivals will be Pepsi, who have been a loyal sponsor of the sister festivals for many years now – like in 2023, when Pepsi MAX (alongside JD, Smirnoff, Captain Morgan, and other major corporations) financially supported the festivals. Through the announcement of these sponsors, Reading and Leeds can prove their financial transparency and show fans which brands they are supporting by attending the festivals .

This year’s lineup seems to be ignoring the rock origins of the festival’s roots

Despite all this, some have still critiqued the 2026 lineup. Many fans are reflecting on previous years of “rocking Reading” and questioning the genre choices of some of the 2026 performers on social media. Whilst 2002 had the Foo Fighters, The Prodigy, and Pulp, this year’s lineup seems to be ignoring the rock origins of the festival’s roots.

Ultimately, though, the release of the headliner list has been a huge success for the Reading and Leeds festival organisers. Less than 48 hours after the release of general sale tickets on Thursday 4 December, tickets had sold out.  It’s fair to say that this summer’s Reading and Leeds festival performances are sure to be a hit.
