Varsity 2026: Women’s hockey hit nine past Coventry to kickstart Saturday scoring

Warwick Women’s Hockey continued three decades of success against rivals Coventry, with a dominant 9-1 win marking the maiden points on the board for Saturday’s varsity action.

Wide awake for the day’s earliest kick-off at 9:15am, Warwick’s hockey side journeyed over to The Place sports centre, Coventry’s home hockey pitch which is located just 5 minutes from the relevantly-named Varsity pub.

The short walk over from central Campus seemed to have kept legs fresh, as the team in red and black found themselves two goals to the good within the opening 15 minutes of play.

Coventry struggled to break out of their own territory for large stretches of the first half, and their goalkeeper, clad in neon pink, had to stay alert at all times. In addition to her efforts, Warwick were denied by both slips on the wet surface and the home goalposts before further extending their advantage. Around 20 minutes in, the ball fell to Caitlin Pickering in the box, who was able to convert and increase the lead to three.

The game looked all but won by the half time whistle

Warwick added a fourth through Ellen Ward from the edge of the penalty area, and shortly after were ahead by five when another shot from Ward was deflected and poked home by Ruby Atack. Despite some solid shot-stopping from Coventry’s goalkeeper, the game looked all but won by the half time whistle.

After a difficult opening 35 minutes, Coventry showed some resilience to strike first in the second half. A ball into the box resulted in a corner for the home side, sending the Warwick defenders scrambling to find their masks from among the kit bags littering the sidelines. Coventry waited patiently, and once Warwick were back in position made no hesitation in firing the ball home. A lifeline for the hosts?

The goal certainly lifted the spirits of the team in blue and white, and a mazy run by Coventry’s number 22 looked to spark them into life. Warwick stayed firm, and on the turnover of possession got themselves back upfield for another corner. The set piece was duly converted to restore the lead to five.

Women’s Hockey can celebrate the rest of Varsity knowing that their thirty five year winning streak remains intact

Moments later, Warwick chased down Coventry’s restart to win another corner, which was finished off smartly by Atack to increase the lead to seven.

Warwick were enjoying themselves now on the attack, and when a combination between Atack and Palk led to yet another corner, it was captain Lucy Griffiths who drove low from the edge of the box through a crowd of bodies to make it eight.

With the victory surely secured, Warwick stood off their opponents a little and allowed for them to attack, though there was still no clear way through for Coventry. Getting forward on the counter late into the game, Warwick picked their passes through a tired home side and afforded Ella McCartney time and space to pick out a ninth and final goal.

The full time whistle went shortly after, and both teams showed class in respective victory and defeat. Women’s Hockey can celebrate the rest of Varsity safe in the knowledge that their thirty five year winning streak remains comfortably intact.
