“Needless to say I was inspired”: Tomás Doncker on his upcoming single ‘¡2 BEAUCOUP!’

Alternative-R&B artist Tomás Doncker has been in the music, arts, and culture scenes since the early 1980s. Set to release his new single ‘¡2 BEAUCOUP!’ on 27 February 2026, I was fortunate enough to speak with the Donker about the release.

Inspired by “artists across all the disciplines”, ranging from “Fela Kuti, James Baldwin, Marvin Gaye to Patti Smith, Sly Stone and The Specials”, Doncker describes his creative journey as “genre-less”, arguing to “make music, period.” In making music, he has “No ‘End Game’” but rather aims to use music to “heal wounded hearts and open closed minds”. He is committed to “being a part of that story”, which is reflected in ‘¡2 BEAUCOUP!’.

The song was produced with James Dellatacoma, a skilled multi-instrumentalist, and mastered by Michael Fossenkemper, whom Doncker refers to as “my guys”. This group of creatives have “made a lot of records together”, and the process, according to Doncker, is “an honour and a pleasure”.

Doncker recalls having “a lot of fun with this track”

In Paris, the track was recorded after Doncker had performed ‘People Have The Power’ with the legendary Patti Smith at The L’Olympia Theatre. During the performance, he states he “witnessed firsthand the magic of music to create community and unify voices”. Smith in urging “the audience to never stop speaking out against injustice” had a profound impact on Doncker: “needless to say I was inspired”.

It holds great contemporary importance, as put by Doncker, “It’s rooted in everything that’s going on nowadays”. It’s manifestation of his “own frustration and disappointment” with the “global fascist groundswell”. In its sonic and lyrical material, in which Doncker’s urgent vocals croon an exuberant display of unity, ‘¡2 BEAUCOUP!’. attempts to “hold up a mirror, which the world needs to take a sobering look into”.

Doncker recalls having “a lot of fun with this track”. He mentioned that in its foundation, the track “was based on the legendary Cab Calloway’s big band arrangements, mixed with cartoon music”. The final product? A track driven by disco and funk-infused drumbeats, groove-laden guitars, and bursts of horns.

It’s part of a much larger multimedia presentation

In spirit, the song aligns heavily with the broader discography of Doncker, continuing to blend “socially conscious messages and imagery with cold-blooded groove”. This combination has been found to always be “powerful”, according to Doncker. The entire track is a highlight, “It’s part of a much larger multimedia presentation” that is currently in the works, titled ‘Everybody’s Black’: Doncker urges us to “stay tuned”!

Accompanying the single, I asked if there would be a music video upon release. “Not exactly”, Doncker teased. In elaboration, Doncker claimed that they are “not creating music videos in the traditional sense”; however, it will be accompanied by a different form of visual media. With this single, Doncker was “fortunate to be able to collaborate with a brilliant team of visual artists, St Germaine.” He further described their work as “groundbreaking”.

The single cover was created by these visual artists: “It definitely captures the painfully ironic and absurd tone of the song, and the times in which we live.” Make sure to tune into ‘¡2 BEAUCOUP!’ upon release on 27 February 2026.
