An overview of Warwick’s music societies
Societies at Warwick are a key part of the university experience, not to mention a great way to meet like-minded people as a fresher. Here is my brief guide to the music-based societies at Warwick, giving you all the information you need to find your niche among the endless number of societies we have to offer. Whether you plan to dive straight in and get your teeth stuck into some musical performance or would rather sit back and appreciate the music from a distance, there’s something for everyone! With societies catering for even the most eclectic music tastes, you are sure to find something that tickles your fancy.
Give it a go, you’ve got nothing to lose by coming to audition or just trying out the first few rehearsals!
Rachel Chisnall, Symphony Orchestra Marketing Director
Warwick Big Band is arguably one of the largest music societies yet is incredibly friendly and welcoming. They are a non-auditioned band and have a very active social life! From jazz jams and weekly rehearsals to playing society balls and countless gigs, Big Band is an amazing opportunity for those looking to expand their repertoire. Covering genres such as swing, funk, Latin, jazz, bebop, blues, and pop, Big Band’s versatility and professionalism appeal to any dedicated musician. Will Henderson, President of Big Band, says that the term tours are some of his best memories within the society. Getting to play with other university big bands across the country means that the society is not simply confined to Warwick’s own campus but is also a great way to connect with others and visit new cities!
Additionally, if you fancy trying your hand at becoming the next Mozart, then the Symphony Orchestra may be for you! The society enables students to perform large-scale orchestral works in concert, conducted by the MC’s Orchestral Conductor Tom Newall. Alongside weekly rehearsals, the society runs bar crawls, games nights, circles as well as an annual tour! Marketing Director Rachel Chisnall asks that freshers “Give it a go, you’ve got nothing to lose by coming to audition or just trying out the first few rehearsals!”.
We would be enchanted to meet you!
Kathryn Nudds, SwiftSoc Vice President and Secretary
However, not all music societies require the ability to actually play an instrument. Many societies exist purely to bond over similar music tastes and simply appreciate music! RockSoc, Warwick Bass, and K-Pop Society to name but a few are tight-knit, music-loving communities that are excited to welcome any new members. Taylor Swift Society in particular exists solely for the celebration of Taylor Swift’s music. A standout event run by the society are their Wonderland club nights, involving a themed circle followed by four hours of non-stop Taylor Swift tunes, what’s not to love! Vice President and Secretary of SwiftSoc Kathryn Nudds affirms: “We would be enchanted to meet you!”
If pop music is not your speed, Warwick Offbeat promises to deliver. Considered the home of indie and alternative music at Warwick, the society was established in 1984 and is still going strong to this day. Their famous CD swap opens you up to new music, the society embracing even the quirkiest tracks. As well as hosting house parties and karaoke sessions, Offbeat is a lively and dynamic society, offering a unique way to break up the tedium of your academic studies!
All in all, Warwick offers a wide variety of music-based societies, including but not limited to those mentioned. Check out the Warwick Student Union website to view the full list and remember to get involved!
