Arrowing for gold: A look at the recent successes of Warwick’s Archery Club

The University of Warwick Archery Club (UWAC) has had an eventful season with many memorable moments.

The club is an Archery GB affiliated club which is a part of the County of Warwickshire Archery Association and the West Midlands Archery Association.

On 20 April, UWAC went to the BUTC competition held at Sheffield University. The BUTC is the British University Team Championships for archery – it is arguably the most important event in the calendar for this university sport.

UWAC sent two team over: the Warwick A team consisted of James Gardner, Jake O’Reilly, and Wills Chiu; the Warwick B team was made up of Ryan Zhou, Shane Pothunnah, and Sruti Patel.

This was a very successful day for Warwick. The A team beat Lancaster University in the Finals to take first place and earn some gold medals,  while Warwick’s B team placed fifth out of 24 teams, beating many A teams from other universities along the way – including Sheffield’s A team who they defeated in the first round. Warwick A team was also forced to compete against Warwick B team.

Overall the BUTC was a very fun and rewarding day for both of Warwick’s teams, and we can’t wait to be back next time.

Our competitions so far have been great fun and we look ahead to the BUCS outdoor competition taking place on 8-9 June

The other standout competition UWAC took part in was, of course, BUCS Indoors. Due to archery having both an indoor and outdoor season, we have two BUCS competitions, with BUCS Indoors on 16 March, and BUCS Outdoors happening later in the year.

The competition saw another strong showing from both Warwick’s novices and experienced archers. Our novice team placed third in the qualifiers, with two of our novices, Alessio Cocciolo and Yasmin Ford, making it through to the finals. This was an incredible achievement for novice archers.

For the finals, our Women’s Non-Compound Team managed to place fifth out of 17, and our Men’s Non-Compound Team narrowly missed out on first place, beaten to the gold by Nottingham – although this defeat was only by six points. The team came away with a silver medal.

Our competitions so far have been great fun and we look ahead excitedly to the BUCS outdoor competition taking place on 8-9 June.
