Tokyo 2020: Great Britain finishes the Games with 65 medals

Great Britain has finished the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with 65 medals.

The nation picked up 22 gold medals, 20 silvers and 22 bronzes to finish fourth in the medal table, below the USA, China and hosts Japan.

The total equalled Team GB’s tally for London 2012, and was just two below the Rio 2016.

It falls comfortably within UK Sport’s pre-Games medal target of 45-70 medals for the team. There was no target set for individual sports, as it was deemed impossible to properly evaluate the position of each sport in the context of disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Swimming was Great Britain’s most successful sport. The nation picked up eight medals – four golds, three silvers and a bronze – in what was the British swimming team’s most successful Olympics ever.

Team GB won three golds in both sailing and cycling events, with Jason Kenny becoming the nation’s most decorated Olympian in the process. They also won both golds available in the modern pentathlon.

Boxing provided a wealth of medals, with six in total – two of each colour.

The nation had a number of notable successes in new sports and events. It won the inaugural gold medals in the women’s BMX freestyle and madison events, as well as taking top spot in the mixed 4x100m medley swimming relay and triathlon mixed team relay.

Despite finishing fourth in the final medal tally, Team GB chef de mission Mark England hailed the medal haul in Tokyo as “the greatest achievement in British Olympic history”.

He said: “Not only has the team made history but it has probably made history on the back of the most complex and most challenging and difficult environment that we will face certainly in my lifetime. It has been against all the odds and I think it is the greatest achievement in British Olympic history. It has been the miracle of Tokyo.”
