Tokyo 2020: Liam Heath wins kayaking bronze

Team GB’s Liam Heath took bronze in a photo finish during the men’s kayak single 200m.

Heath hoped to defend his title after winning gold in the event at Rio 2016, but will be happy with a medal after making a “hesitant start” in the event.

He crossed the finish line in 35.202, just edging out Hungary’s Kolos Csizmadia for third place.

The gold went to another Hungarian, Sandor Totka, who won in 35.035, while Italy’s Manfredi Rizza took silver.

Heath, who has now won medals at three consecutive Games, set an Olympic-best time of 33.985 seconds in qualifying, but was unable to translate that pace to the main event.

After the event, Heath said: “It’s hard to put into words, it’s what you’re working towards, to be at your best for these events and I’ve learned so much along my journey.

“You learn more about yourself, your competitors and the people you work with day in, day out. It’s them working tirelessly behind the scenes which provides the support for me to be able to achieve my dreams.

“A massive thanks to everybody that’s watching at home. Not quite the gold, but I’m happy with my performance so I hope you guys can be happy too.”

Heath previously said that he was likely to retire after these Games, but has now suggested he may compete at Paris 2024.
