BREAKING: Circling for POP! cancelled until further notice

POP! circles at all Students’ Union (SU) and University venues have been cancelled until further notice, Warwick SU President Liam Jackson has just announced.

The Wednesday night event however will continue to be held in the Copper Rooms for Weeks 3 and 4.

In an email, Mr Jackson said: “If your society organises circling activities which involve alcoholic drinking games, we recognise that this will be a disappointment and we’re sorry to be telling you at such short notice.”

The event has been cancelled due to “a potential concern regarding…alcohol licensing conditions” and similar activities.

“We need to review this carefully before we are able to confirm the types of circling activities which are permitted,” Mr Jackson said.

He welcomes students to provide feedback via feedback@warwicksu.com. More information will be available later in May.

More updates will be provided in due course.

UPDATE (2/5/2019): In response to an inquiry from The Boar about the SU’s future plans and advice for societies and clubs, Mr Jackson said that updates will be provided “by the end of May, before Week 7 Pop”.

He reiterated that circling was cancelled because a “potential concern has been identified regarding the alcohol licensing conditions”.

“We are taking advice and we need to review this carefully,” he said. “Unfortunately, we’re not in a position to disclose any more information at this stage.”

“We would like to clarify from our statement that alcoholic drinking games are not permitted in any licensed premises on campus (for example pubs, nightclubs and the Piazza),” he further wrote. “We would like to remind students that all campus outlets are trading as normal, and Pop will continue to take place from 10pm.”

“As ever, we encourage all clubs and societies to make their socials accessible and inclusive and if alcohol is involved to promote responsible drinking.”
