The Boar’s top articles in 2017
This year has been a busy one for us here at The Boar, having had over 1 million page views in over 150 countries over the past twelve months.
As we count down the hours until 2018, we’d like to look back at our most-read articles in 2017 and thank you all so much for supporting everything we’ve done.
Here’s to the New Year!
5: Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner spotted in Leamington Spa
The news that the DNCE singer and Game of Thrones star were spotted in Leamington was our fifth most-read article of 2017.
Sophie Turner had been spotted in the student town previously, but this is the first time the pair was seen together.
A few months after this took place, their engagement was announced.
4: The Jug and Jester has closed down
The announcement that the Jug and Jester, one of only two Wetherspoons in the area and a regular student haunt, was unsurprisingly one of our most read articles this year.
Both students at Warwick and residents in Leamington were shocked at the time, as there had been no announcement prior to the shutting of The Jug and Jester.
Fortunately for us, the property was only vacant for a month until Stonegate converted it into a new favourite among students, The Old Library. We were even there on its opening day to give a quick review!
3: Invisible illness: What it’s like studying with Crohn’s
Our Head of Social Media, Lucy Stubbings, decided to open up and write about her invisible illness in this beautiful and informative piece.
This article not only resonated with students at our university, but with people all over the world. In fact, the official Twitter account for Crohn’s and Colitis UK tweeted the article in March, sharing the article with all of their 28,000 followers.
2: Warwick student’s leading role in Facebook hate group exposed
Last month, we published an article about a student’s involvement in an extremist right Facebook group, Young Right Society.
It includes multiple screenshots, courtesy of anti-racist advocacy group Hope Not Hate, as well as comment from societies that the individual was a part of.
1: Malala Yousafzai applies for PPE at Warwick
Back in March, we broke the story that the Nobel Prize winner had applied to study at the University of Warwick as one of her five choices for university applications.
She’d chosen to apply to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Warwick, which is highly ranked in multiple league tables across the UK.
Ms Yousafzai ended up attending Oxford University to study PPE.
