Redfern revamped: New campus accommodation set for green light
A new multi-million pound accommodation development on the University of Warwick’s campus is set to be approved.
If given the green light, the development, named Cryfield Residences, will comprise of 11 buildings featuring 794 beds. The buildings will have a ‘town-house’ style, with each flat including 6-12 beds. It is hoped that the development will resemble a miniature village, complete with offices, a laundrette, a post room and a student meeting area.
The development will replace the Redfern halls, which are set to be demolished. Redfern consists of five buildings which house 214 students. It will be built in March and will be situated on the land to the west of Gibbet Hill Road.
It is hoped that these residencies will help tackle the problem of the accommodation shortage on campus, which each year means that some freshers must share rooms in Westwood and temporarily stay in hotels.
The University has commented that: “The new accommodation will help to address the growing demand for on-campus accommodation, and to support the University’s longer-term growth.”
Furthermore, a planning statement has added: “The new Cryfield Village will be part of a wider capital projects investment programme, which between 2010 and 2020, will see the university investing an average of £59m each year, supporting 600 jobs.
“The application proposals will provide much-needed student accommodation and help develop the growth objectives of the university with associated socio-economic benefits.”
