New Cryfield Village accommodation plans revealed

Plans have been revealed by the University for a “new and rather different” set of student residences to be built at Cryfield Village, set to open in 2019.

The new accommodation will have a village-style layout and will replace the current Redfern residences, with the aim of creating more accommodation for students than the existing Redfern buildings offer.

The residences will be built to resemble a miniature village with its own central hub surrounded by townhouse style accommodation.

Options are still being investigated for what this central hub will actually entail; the University has listed “study spaces, music rooms, a laundrette and a post area” as potential options.

Over 700 rooms are to be built in apartments and studio flats, with six to twelve beds in each townhouse.

It is hoped that the new residences will provide a solution to the ongoing difficulties caused by the lack of student accommodation.

Every year since 2010, several new undergraduate students have had to share single-bed rooms in Westwood or temporarily stay in hotels, and some postgraduate students have been told upon arrival to find their own places to live off-campus.

The University hopes: “The new accommodation will help to address the growing demand for on-campus accommodation, and to support the University’s longer-term growth.”

Building work for the new residences is set to start in the autumn of 2017, and you can see some potential designs of the site on the Warwick website.
