Crushing Warwick wins at Cryfield

A crisp autumnal afternoon at Cryfield played host to an entertaining day of football and lacrosse. The Women’s football 1s enjoyed something of a walk in the park in their game against Loughborough 4s; Themistocleous’ free kick was as impressive as the opposition goalkeeper was calamitous, and the girls eventually ran out thoroughly deserved 8-1 winners. A win too for the Men’s 3s – a flowing team move was finished well by Osei for the first and the lads never looked back, notching up a professional 3-1 win over Bedfordshire 2s. Unfortunately the Men’s 4s couldn’t make it a hat-trick. A poor first half left the team too much to do in the second and succumbed 2-0 to Derby 2s in an audibly frustrating and scrappy affair.

More success came via lacrosse, with all four teams on show. Highlights were not short to come by, as the Women’s 1s came out on top in an end to end match against their Nottingham Trent equivalent, a fine team display securing a 9-6 win. It’s fair to say that the Men’s 1s local derby against Birmingham 2s was less tight – 11-1 up at half-time, the guys really took their foot off the gas and only put seven past the opposition in the second half!

The comeback that never was

“Don’t panic!” It was a despairing plea, a cry of frustration that rose above the fractious murmurings of the huddled Leicester players. It had been a half of dominance from Warwick Men’s Hockey 1s, each attack an exacting trial on the visitors’ crumbling resolve. “Focus on your jobs!” Vexed groans met the frenetic interjections of the coach, desperate to reinvigorate a team low on confidence after recent heavy defeats.

Yet as play resumed, the air of hopelessness seemed less hopeless. Leicester held their press, sitting deep in their own half in a bid to constrict space and absorb Warwick pressure, looking to spring onto the counter-attack from a misplaced pass. It so nearly produced results: a whirling shot deflected just wide of the post. Apprehension grew among the home crowd. Fears of an improbable comeback quickly dissipated, however, as the hosts scored again. That Warwick rarely went higher than second gear in a comfortable 5-1 win will no doubt serve as encouragement to a team that now moves into second place, still unbeaten in the league. As for Leicester, a long and taxing season awaits.

Women’s Tennis lose out in titanic tennis tussle

This one was edgy. Warwick 1s v Nottingham 2s: two teams in red-hot form, unbeaten in the league and top of the table – a slender goal difference the sole divider. Both expect a title challenge, both dream of promotion glory; with three points a must, the gravity of the occasion evaded neither.

For Warwick, tensions increased with two early defeats in the doubles. What had been a chance to cement title credentials now resembled a rescue mission. Nikita Anand led the fightback with composure that belied the magnitude of the game, delivering a performance that combined intelligence and skill in equal measure, capped by a delicious lob that affirmed her superiority. But, bruised but not quite bloodied, Nottingham stood firm. For Warwick, beaten 8-4, the first defeat of the season was one of disappointment but not wholly disheartening. In the marathon that is BUCS, title dreams may endure.
