Americans at Warwick: 176 US students studying here
One-hundred and seventy six of the 23,420 full-time students at Warwick University have a Country of Domicile of ‘United States of America’. This means that, of the 6,411 international students studying here, 2.7% of them are American citizens.
Last year, UK universities saw a record number of Americans applying to study full-time courses.
This was revealed in UCAS data details that showed a 5% increase in the year 2015/16, and a rise of a third in US first degree students over the past five academic years.
With the American presidential elections fast approaching, the Boar spoke to two potential US voters at Warwick, and asked them their opinions about the upcoming presidential elections.
Alice Fish, a second-year Film and Literature student who holds a dual American-British nationality, expresses her growing fear for November 8. She explains that, like many, she was not worried about the seemingly obvious choice of candidate, stating: “I took the idea of Trump as President as something ridiculous and impossible.
“However, several months later, I would say I was pretty concerned. Just as the post-Brexit aftermath provoked higher levels of xenophobic attacks, I can totally see a successful Trump election causing widespread higher levels of racism, sexism and homophobia.”

As a Hilary supporter, she also commented: “It is said that ‘women have to do twice as much to get half the credit’ and I think that is totally accurate regarding Hilary.”
Steve Dunne, an American Politics postgraduate student at Warwick, explained that Hilary’s previous experiences in politics, both as the First Lady and Secretary of State means that she is “possibly the most qualified person to run in America”.
Despite being a Hilary supporter, he also mentioned that she could be seen as a contentious figure, due to her “bad record in the 90’s”, in addition to the fact that some regarded her as untrustworthy based on the email leaks.
He also suggested that the rise of Trump could be due to the dissatisfaction of Obama’s governance, such as the Obamacare and the national debt accumulated during his time in office.
