New policing scheme to be launched in Leamington, Kenilworth and Warwick

A new scheme is being launched in South Warwickshire to tackle crimes such as burglary and drug offences.

According to the Leamington Observer, the “innovative” new scheme will be focused in the major towns of Kenilworth, Leamington, Warwick, Alcester, and Southam, amongst others.

It will consist of a new Special Constabulary Priorities Team (SPT) of 17 skilled Special Constables, who will address problems raised by local police and Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) in the area.

The team is made up of members of the local community who volunteer their time on a weekly basis to support the police force, by patrolling events and increasing awareness of crime prevention.

In particular they will target problems such as vehicle theft, rural crime, burglary and drug offences. The team will have clear aims, which involve increasing the strength of local and community bonds, and protecting them.

The team’s aims will be decided based on focused priority needs, and issues that need solving in particular areas.

The Chief Constable of Warwickshire Police, Martin Jelley, told the Leamington Observer that: “The team will deliver prevention and early intervention activities in partnership with stakeholders, schools and other community partners.”

Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Seccombe also believes that the introduction of the scheme will vastly reduce crime and improve local awareness.

He commented: “The Special Constabulary plays an important role in assisting regular officers and PCSOs provide highly-visible policing in our communities.

“This new team will help to ensure the police can be even more effective at tackling the issues that matter – preventing crime and protecting the vulnerable.”
