Safety measures installed at Cannon Park crossing

Coventry City Council are installing pedestrian refuge islands at the Cannon Park road crossing, after years of both the University and SU pushing for greater safety measures.

In 2014, concerns over road safety were raised following the death of Warwick student, Maggie Cheung, who was hit by a lorry outside Tesco.

This led to an online petition being organised. The sabbatical team at the time also conducted a speed-watch in the area.

The work to create a roundabout at the junction between Lynchgate Road and Sir William Lyons Road started on Monday 4 July.

One aim is to improve pedestrian safety, with the installation of central pedestrian refuge islands to help in the crossing of the road.

The footpath along Lynchgate Road will also be widened to accommodate for cyclists.

The roundabout will also support access to a newly-constructed 629 space multi-storey car park opening later this year as well as improving vehicle access to the Science Park.

Darren Limantara, a first-year Economics student, commented that whilst it will be useful, “a signalled crossing” is still needed.

Jamie Lee Jenkins, first-year History student stated: “A crossing is definitely needed in the area to make it safer and easier.”

  • A signal crossing is definitely a bad idea due to the poor visibility on the road caused by the petrol station. The signals wouldn’t be able to be seen by most traffic in time; those familiar with the road would slow down, but those who weren’t wouldn’t have time to see it.

Short of installing a bridge or an underpass this is definitely the best solution and it’s nice to see the council being proactive with road safety on such a dangerous crossing. Good stuff.
