RLT: We just don’t feel safe anymore

In a period that for many people represents the most gruelling, mentally taxing time of their lives, the RLT are our first point of call, a key pillar in our network of student support services.

The help they offer is vital, looking out for students’ general, physical well being and safety. Readily available advice is invaluable, and in most cases the RLT offer an impeccable service.

That is why with great disappointment we have chosen to publish this issue’s lead story centred on allegations of widespread ill practise amongst RLT members. The evidence is unsettling on a number of levels. It demonstrates an alarming lack of ability to deal with welfare incidents, failures to use their social budget appropriately in order improve the student experience, and perhaps most shocking, a compliance with Prevent, one of the most openly discriminatory government policies in recent years.

Issues have been flagged up by a range of sources and these cannot be ignored. Efforts may have been made already to examine the RLT as a body, but these quite clearly have not done enough.

This is not a mere news story, this is a student concern that will effect Warwick for years to come. In order to move forward, necessary changes need to be made.
