Warwick Quidditch Club to compete in Italy

Warwick’s Quidditch Club, which has only been around for two years, will compete in Italy this month.

This is the first time that the team will compete abroad.

The British Quidditch Cup, a two day tournament, took place in March this year. At the end of the first day, Warwick were ranked first.

On the second day of the tournament, the team progressed to the finals but fell short of victory. The Oxford Quidditch Club, Radcliffe Chimeras, came in first place instead.

The Warwick team was able to send one of their members, second-year Maths student Ben Malpass, to Team UK, which is described to be “the pinnacle of the domestic competitive season”.

Team UK has 35 members and will participate in the International Quidditch Association (IQA) World Cup in Frankfurt this July.

This weekend, the Warwick team will be travelling to Gallipoli, Italy to compete in the European Quidditch Cup (EQC) for its largest tournament in history, where they will be playing teams from countries such as France, Spain, Italy and Turkey.

There will be eight British teams in the tournament out of the 40 teams in total.

The tournament is being directed by Jacopo Sartori, coach of the Warwick Quidditch Club, who says: “I can’t wait to be working with the committee to make EQC 2016 an unforgettable tournament for everyone involved.”

Sebastian Waters, second-year Maths student and Warwick Quidditch captain, says: “we can’t wait to test ourselves against the best in Europe.”
