Former French Budget Minister: “We are lying to people”
Many people, especially those of French nationality, may have various feelings concerning Jean-François Copé, the Former French Budget Minister (2004-2007). However, there are no doubts that he was the most positive character on the opening day of the Warwick Economic Summit 2016.
“We are facing a difficult situation which needs to be solved immediately”, emphasized the French politician at the beginning of his speech about “Political and Economic Answers to Populism in Europe”.
Indeed, the pace at which right-wing parties are currently gaining support is unbelievable. 27% of electoral trust for the National Front in France, the Law and Justice party being elected recently in Poland or the rule of the present government in Hungary show that political populism is a very effective weapon nowadays.
Europeans should have every reason to be happy, when you make a comparison with the rest of the world
Even though, as the Former French Budget Minister says, “Europeans should have every reason to be happy, when you make a comparison with the rest of the world”, there is something that is lacking and which convinces people to choose the path of populism instead of rational choice.
According to Jean-François Copé, the reason for that lie in “the lack of results of European politicians” to cope with the constant flow of migrants. And, most importantly, in the inability of the people who get elected to fulfill their promises.
The former French Budget minister seemed to be aware of that fact and saw the answers for that problems in rebuilding the trust of the parties towards their electorate through “bringing to the people a real explanation of the situation”.
“We are lying to people!”, he admitted at the end of the speech while discussing established parties, and received a round of applause.
That night, Jean-François Copé was not afraid of telling the truth about politics to the Warwick University students. That night, he tried to named real problems while providing realistic solutions for them. That night, he started to rebuild electorate trust which seemed to be the root of the modern populism.
Without questioning, people in the audience could finally see the light in the political tunnel and therefore hope for the better future of Europe. Now, these are not words but the concrete action which needs to be provided.
