Why I would never date Jay Gatsby

[dropcap]I[/dropcap] remember a friend recommending The Great Gatsby to me in college, claiming that it was the ‘greatest love story’ she’d ever read. When I finally read it, I was extremely puzzled. Fitzgerald’s protagonist wasn’t the chivalrous young lover that I expected – he was a creep. Who on earth buys a house across 4286755143_e247f093c9_ofrom that of their crush so they can be aware of the latter’s every move? Or keeps clippings of them for five years?

Jay Gatsby is not in love: he is deluded and obsessed. In his mind, Daisy Buchanan is the embodiment of happiness and success, and he will do everything in his power to attain her. I for one would not answer the door if Gatsby turned up on Valentine’s, even if he did look as handsome as DiCaprio. Oh, and I would probably consider moving house.
