#VarsityOnesToWatch: Basketball

What does varsity mean to you?

For us, Varsity is an opportunity to showcase the sport we love to the University as a whole. Last year saw the biggest crowds we’ve ever had and so many new fans “I never knew Basketball was so fun to watch!”. We cannot wait to experience the same again this year and hopefully bring home two wins because, as sportsmen and women, who doesn’t love a rivalry?

Which of your players should we keep an eye out for?

Men’s team:

Let’s start with the Veterans: skipper Jack and point guard Phil, expect lots of points from outside shots, steals and fast breaks. Our big men and PhD students Matteo and Vangelis should dominate the boards. We have some excellent freshers this year including leading point scorer Shaq, a real showman on the court!

Women’s team:

Look out for the three As: The ‘lightning quick’ point guard fresher Angela, you can expect many a fast break basket. The ‘spin moving’ inside player Alex, expect rebounds galore. And the ‘all round expert’ shooting guard Anne, except anything and everything including a high scoring game.

Why should people get behind Team Warwick and support you in varsity?

Sport is integral to the University experience and promotes team work and commitment but beyond this it unites us all against the common enemy – Coventry! We need all the support we can muster to make it 26 years undefeated!

For the women it’s the pure domination we have experienced for the past two years – winning by around 40 points each time and really showcasing our talent!

Is this your biggest game of the year?

This is a huge game for both our teams, up there with our cup final campaigns!

What is your favourite varsity moment?

For the men’s team it has to be their win two years ago, after a nail-biting end to end fixture we narrowly came out on top! For the women it’s the pure domination we have experienced for the past two years – winning by around 40 points each time and really showcasing our talent!
