Alcohol limits cut back in new guidelines
We all know that drinking alcohol isn’t exactly brilliant for our health, but the government are set to announce new guidelines to cut how much we drink.
A review by the chief medical officer for England is likely to propose that we stay dry for at least two days per week – a guideline already in place in Scotland. The new guidelines are to say there is no safe alcohol limit and even drinking small amounts could cause serious illnesses including cancer.
The review will probably advise that the maximum daily intake for males is reduced from 3-4 units to 2-3 units, bringing it in line with the current recommendation for females. The equivalent of 2-3 units in liquid form would be the same number of vodka shots – a little less than most of you probably hoped.
It might all sound like doom and gloom, but taking a couple of days off can have positive effects on the rest of your life. Remember that alcohol isn’t always necessary; your essay deadlines are (sometimes) possible without a glass in one hand, labs are occasionally better when you aren’t hungover and Kelsey can wait for a couple of days a week. Honest.
