Maahwish Mirza announces cohort examination feedback
In a move that is set to change the way that university departments offer feedback to pupils, Maahwish Mirza, the outgoing Education Officer, announced the introduction of cohort examination feedback.
This is a result of a long campaign by Ms Mirza to ensure that all university departments offer better and more relevant examination feedback to students.
It is hoped that the current gap between departments, which sees some students receiving full individual feedback and others none at all, will be reduced by the introduction of cohort feedback.
This feedback will offer a guideline as to how students coped with questions and answers generally, although the departments who already offer individual feedback will not make the change.
One of these departments is Politics and International Studies, which is currently the only member of the Social
Sciences department to provide individual written exam feedback.
Full changes will be put in place in time for next year’s examinations.
After a year of campaigning, Maahwish marked it as a “step in the right direction.”
She said: “As outlined in my previous blogs, examination feedback is vital for students to gain an understanding of what is required to improve on their performance in an extremely key component of their assessment.
“I would encourage students to ask their tutors for expanded commentary on what makes for a good examination performance – sometimes all you need to do is ask.”
Charlie Hindhaugh, the newly elected Education Officer, praised Maahwish on her achievements and pledged to ensure that her work isn’t undone in the next academic year.
He said: “The decision to provide cohort feedback has been a result of the tireless effort put in by the Education Officer Maahwish Mirza and the team at the SU.
“I will be working to now make the case for individual feedback on exams, The PAIS department has proven it is possible and I’m hoping that other departments will follow their example.”
