New campus bus routes explained

Bus routes and traffic has been disrupted as there has been a closure of University Road between the new Arts Centre roundabout and the top of Health Centre Road.

The closure, which started Sunday 25 January is expected last until early in the summer term, April 11.

According to the University, the closure comes as part of their work to remodel and enhance the area around the Rootes building and the Arts Centre in order to create a new Central Plaza.

Stagecoach U1 bus routes, however, have been disrupted and no longer come into central campus via the stop near Rootes Grocery Store. Instead, the buses will come in from the Gatehouse and Sport Centre stops before reaching the terminal stop behind the Maths and Stats building.

On a Facebook post by the Students’ Union (SU), it is understood that as of 4pm Wednesday 28, students boarding on the U1 bus to Leamington Spa can only get on at the Maths and Stats stops further down the loop road. The Gatehouse and Sports Centre stops will remain as drop-off points only.

UPDATE (Sat 31): It has been confirmed by StageCoach that U1 bus services will now serve the Gatehouse and Sport Centre stops for pick-ups and drop-offs.

Temporary U1 bus route from Jan 25 to Apr 11

National express buses 11 and 12 will however be picking up and dropping off at the Gatehouse and Sport Centre bus stops. The further stop down the loop road will be used for bus 11 to Leamington, while the earlier stop on the loop road will be used for Coventry services 11a and 12.

According to the Network West Midlands, the official changed route is described as follows:

  • Usual route up to Gibbet Road
  • Turn into University Road by the Scarman Road roundabout
  • Travel along University Road
  • Turn left onto the Academic Loop (by the car parks 8 and 8a), travel anti-clockwise (one-way) and past the International Manufacturing Centre
  • Turn right onto University Road
  • Turn onto Gibbet Hill Road, by the Scarman roundabout

The bus stops that will not be in use until April 11 are:

  • the stop in front of the Humanities building (opposite the Sport Centre stops)
  • the stops in front of Rootes Grocery Store
  • the stops in front of the Arts Centre (opposite Rootes Grocery store stops)

The temporary stops in use until April 11 are:

  • the stops at the loop road (near the Maths and Stats building)
