Warwick Comedy Society

Warwick Comedy Society has just returned from the Edinburgh Fringe where they performed a week-long run of their sketch show, Sketchual Tensions. The show featured a variety of sketches that the students had performed earlier on this year and was well-received by paying audiences. However, you don’t have to be a performer to join the society. They have lots of social members too and venture out to the Royal Spa Centre every week in search of the best local comedians around. There are also regular trips to the Warwick Arts Centre and outings to comedy gigs in Birmingham.

In addition to all of this, membership of the society guarantees access to a multitude of DVDs which can all be borrowed for up to fourteen days free of charge. The collection includes the entirety of Ricky Gervais’ The Office and episodes of Monty Python. This term they’ll be running two weekly workshops that focus on performing stand-up and sketch comedy, as well as putting on an hour-long sketch show. They are also going to be organising a showcase of student stand-up in Week 7 where Warwick’s aspiring comedians can try out their best material.

Florrie Sheehan, the society’s president, said that: “Comedy Society has given me the confidence to try new things” and that by “Joining Comedy Society you can learns lots of skills to put into practice both in comedy and in later life”. She also said that she was of the view that stand-up comedy was a something that could be taught, and wanted freshers to know that the society is actively looking for people who would like to try out performing stand-up for the first time.
