Mill-serable Maria: can we still trust our elected politicians?

Maria Miller’s resignation was the only action she could have taken. Her actions and attitude made the situation unarguable. The fact she survived so long lies with the fact that she is one of few loyal ministers Mr Cameron had left.

In an age where MPs are held with contempt and viewed as the lowest of all, Miss Miller’s actions are the blue cherry on top of public hostile actions towards politicians. MPs and people interested in politics need to be the foot soldiers against apathy and cases like these aren’t what we need. Maria Miller was pushed out of office due to pressure of MPs, media and the public at large. A petition for her resignation already had 160,000 signatures. The case also shows the hypocrisy of this government, where we are all meant to be in this together, yet a prominent government loyalist claimed thousands of pounds of taxpayer’s money.

This in an age of austerity where people are forced to move due to benefits changes. Miller’s actions represent everything wrong in politics and in this government as a whole, a focus on money and individualism and a rejection of society itself. If the government wasn’t tar- nished before this, it’s now putrid. Cameron has shown his inability to govern and spent a week defending the indefensible and only acted when all the knives were out. Whether Miller resigned due to her own free will or was pushed doesn’t matter at the end of the day. What does matter is the fact that her actions need to be punished and a simple smack on the wrist will not suffice. Once the general public are shown that most MPs are good, honourable and care about ordinary people then we can get a healthy discussion.

Maria Miller position was simply untenable and she couldn’t remain as a member of the government as she is nothing more than a common criminal.

Until then we are going to get the same old comments that they are all in it for themselves – it only takes one rotten apple to spoil the bunch. MPs need to be whiter than white and Maria Miller was far from that. Maria Miller position was simply untenable and she couldn’t remain as a member of the government as she is nothing more than a common criminal. She should receive justice and therefore cannot remain part of the government in a position of authority and respect.
