Warwick not placed in uni reputation survey

Universities in the United States once again dominate an international league table which ranks institutions by “reputation”.

Universities in the United States have recently beaten UK universities to eight of the top ten coveted spots and 46 of the top 100, on a table recently released by Times Higher Education Magazine.

Harvard University retained the number one spot with a full score, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University in second and third place respectively.

The World Reputation Rankings (Reputation Rankings) for 2014 are based on over 10,500 responses, from 133 countries to a survey sent out last March.

Academics were asked to nominate up to 15 of the best institutions in their area of expertise. The survey considers itself the “world’s largest invitation only academic opinion survey” – only employing published academics with an average of 18 years experience.

The Reputation Rankings, a spin off from the annual university performance report, The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, is based on “subjective judgement”,  according to those who complied the report.

Warwick has never been placed in Reputation Rankings since the first report in 2011, but has dominated the magazine’s other survey: 100 under 50.

American universities frequently top other global league tables, as well as the Reputation Rankings.

Phil Baty, editor of the survey, says the list is dominated by superior “super-brands”, but explained that these institutions don’t necessarily dominate the “employability race”.

The chief executive of Universities UK Nicola Dandridge, has urged UK institutions to investment more in education, to put themselves on par with their American counterparts.

Universities in the UK continue to maintain a high global reputation on other performance league tables.

A spokesman for the Department for Innovation, Business and Skills he advised that, to stay ahead in the global race, we need to make “UK research more accessible” and deliver a “better student experience.”
