The results are in: Cathryn Turhan has won the presidential race to be Warwick Students’ Union (SU) president 2014/15.

Current Welfare Officer Ms Turhan is the first female SU president since Kat Stark held the position in 2006. She was elected with a total of 2,437 votes.

After being elected, Ms Turhan thanked the current SU president, Ben Sundell, for his support. She said: “Ben has been the most inspiring person I’ve met in my life.”

She beat candidates Aaron Bowater and Dieudonne Munyabarenzi for the position, suggesting that experience does in fact count for Warwick students.

Ms Turhan ran her campaign with the promises of bringing back a part-time international officer, contacting sports and societies about student meeting democratic policies that affect them, lobbying the University to cap international fees and for fairer postgraduate pay and developing a Housing Accreditation Scheme.

The role of President involves liaising with the University, representing the Union and its members in committee meetings and campaigning on priority student issues.

Declan, the problem you point out exists in most mature democracies on a national scale. What percentage of the population voted for the Cons in the last general election ?

That’s a good question, George; after quickly noting that for a fair comparison we should be taking a percentage of the UK electorate, rather than population, we find that the answer is still far higher than the “Conservatives” deserved.

One notable exception to your rule would be Australia. Maybe if Cast Iron Dave aka Mr Slippery aka Call Me Dave adopted immigration policies more inline with Liberal hero Tony Abbott’s (including taking back control of our borders and laws from the EU), his share of the vote vis-à-vis electorate size would be similarly massive?

  • A whole 10.6% of students voting for her! #democracy

    • I know! How could those other 89.4% have found out about these elections?

They should have put a few signs up or something…
