Don’t be left in 2013, update your wardrobe to 2014
It may be gone, but 2013 is not forgotten. The trends that were proposed by the designers during last year’s fashion weeks will lead the way for 2014’s new looks. 2013 was significant with a few of my favorite timeless trends such as the use of the colour black, fur, leather and an emphasis on men’s style and midi lengths. 2014 breathes new life into these slightly dull, but always-effective trends. Every year, fashion weeks in London, New York and Milan serve as a bible to everyone who is interested in fashion. We are introduced to new collections for spring and summer and it is always a blast to spot different patterns and trends for the upcoming year. As it has been for the past few years, this spring will be dominated by pastel colors and innovative cuts. One of the trends for 2014 will be fresh crop cuts. All of us have been used to tight crop tops with trousers, skirts or shorts, although this year the main focus will be on dramatic layering, as we can see in the collections of Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga or Sportmax.
The second major upcoming trend for spring and summer is graphics. Designers decided not to focus only on clothing with graphic patterns but also on accessories, like the new line of handbags by Fendi, Satchel Rage or Prada. Most of the designers also turned their attention to new styles of jackets and the two most popular cuts for 2014 are boxy cropped jackets and cool bomber jackets. For trousers, the two main hits of Spring/Summer 2014 will be wide-legged trousers and tuxedo-meets-athletic striped trousers. I spotted the classical white trousers with black stripes along the sides in a Lindex showroom several months ago, and after watching some of the fashion shows I’m confident that this will definitely be a hit. Interestingly, both darker and lighter stripes on sides of the trousers make your legs look thinner and longer; will that be one of your New Year buys?
Some of the next major trends for the upcoming season will be sheer, fringe, ego-boosting embellishments and the always-popular summer floral patterns. A very popular combination amongst the fashion world is floral patterns on a tea length skirt, which many designers have flaunted on the catwalk. The combination of trends offers a wide opportunity to mix up your style and really get creative with your clothes! If you’ve still got some of your Christmas cash left over, an investment coat for 2014 would be the collarless coats that work with dressy trousers, pencil skirts or jeans. On the sporty side, Stella McCartney is continuing her collaboration with Adidas and after a successful fashion show where models performed yoga or cardio we can expect a chic collection including oversized sleeves and sheer materials.
