Warwick University Sport Launch UV Squash

Warwick University’s sport department have created a groundbreaking UK first by introducing UV Squash.

The eclectic idea utilises the same kind of effects as ‘Laser Quest,’ with a pitch-black squash court ignited only by UV lights, so all one can see is the ball, the court markings, and the opponent.

UV Squash is a brand new concept which has been designed to give squash a radical edge and is a unique scheme to encourage greater participation within the sport.

The project was dreamt up and delivered through a partnership between Warwick Sport’s Active programme and the University Squash Club to place the sport on a higher plateau and demonstrate how the University of Warwick is leading the way for Higher Education Sport.

Jen Emeny-Green of Warwick Sport said, “This is a fantastic programme that has gained a really positive response from both the University, ‘England Squash and Racketball’ and the wider community. We really think this will engage an entirely new audience in sport and help them to reap the benefits of getting Active.”

Also speaking of the innovation, Warwick Squash president Jay Warnett mentioned, “Warwick Squash have always strongly encouraged participation in sport across all abilities, employing a variety of initiatives.”

” UV Squash is unique, eye-catching and has caused a stir in a number of communities across the globe. We hope that this demonstration will be replicated at other clubs and inspire more people to play Squash.”

Warwick Sport will be running a UV Squash Festival from the 20th to the 23rd February, open to participants of all abilities at the University and invited clubs.

Similarly, on Saturday 23rd February from 5pm until 10.30pm they are opening their doors to the public so that, amongst other things, spectators can witness an exhibition match at 9pm, with the players yet to be confirmed. There will be a small entrance fee to go towards the charity ‘Right to Play’.

This event has got the backing of ‘England Squash and Racketball’ and demonstrates the strength of the sport’s appeal in line with the ‘Squash 2020’ Olympic campaign.
