2012: A Boar News round-up

The Boar presents a round up of the biggest and most entertaining news stories of the year.

January

In its biggest partnership to date, the University created an alliance with Monash University in Australia, whilst failing to secure a bid for a campus in New York. The Monash Alliance has created new collaborative research posts as well as providing opportunities to students from both universities. January also saw Quadruplets graduating from Warwick and an investigation into a mysterious ‘big cat’.

February

The Boar reported on the sad news that [human remains were found near to the University](https://theboar.org/news/2012/feb/29/human-remains-found-near-university/), as well as identifying and [reporting on an exodus of senior University figures](https://theboar.org/news/2012/feb/26/exodus-senior-university-figures/). The library’s [planned expansion was announced in February](https://theboar.org/news/2012/feb/11/massive-library-expansion-planned/) and a [petition to incorporate the ‘Koan’ into the Warwick logo began](https://theboar.org/news/2012/feb/23/whats-koan/). The University’s Business School (WBS) led a new [partnership](https://theboar.org/news/2012/feb/23/plays-thing/) between the University and the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), using its roots in the bard’s native county.

The _Boar_ also discovered that the year’s Varsity raffle [may have been rigged](https://theboar.org/news/2012/feb/8/varsity-raffle-rigged/).

A hugely successful month for the student paper; its reporting was also recognised by Ones To Watch Media, which named the _Boar_ as [student publication of the month](http://onestowatchmedia.com/2012/03/02/student-publication-of-the-month-february-2012/).

**March**

Warwick students in Leamington were affected by a [crime wave](https://theboar.org/news/2012/mar/7/students-hit-leamington-crime-wave/) that saw thefts and robberies from student homes increase drastically. Warwick’s Big Band bus [caught fire](https://theboar.org/news/2012/mar/12/nobody-injured-big-band-bus-fire/) on a main road whilst transporting members to perform at a festival in Sunderland.

**April**

Warwick announced a [collaboration with Queen Mary](https://theboar.org/news/2012/apr/15/warwick-announces-academic-partnership-queen-mary/), University of London as well and the [murder of a Warwick graduate in China](https://theboar.org/news/2012/apr/21/graduate-murder-sparks-chinese-political-scandal/) sparked a political scandal within the Chinese Communist Party.

**May**

A [43-year-old man was charged with the murder](https://theboar.org/news/2012/may/28/two-arrested-after-body-found-near-university/) of the missing man whose remains were round near to the University in February. The _Boar_ reported that University teaching [remained unchanged](https://theboar.org/news/2012/may/25/fees-increase-had-no-impact-teaching/) following the 2006 fees rise. The Students’ Union (SU) [launched a ‘hungry for feedback’ campaign](https://theboar.org/news/2012/may/22/university-needs-get-their-act-together-over-feedb/), “probably the biggest gain on academic quality since I’ve been at Warwick” according to current education officer James Entwistle.

Two radio hosts at the University’s radio station, RaW, were [kicked off the airwaves](https://theboar.org/news/2012/may/18/abusive-pair-kicked-raw-spot/) and the [Olympic torch returned to Campus](https://theboar.org/news/2012/may/27/olympic-torch-returns-campus/).

**June**

Warwick urged the government to reconsider its student immigration policy, arguing it would harm the economy and inspirational English and Theatre Studies student, Jessi Parrott, who suffers from cerebral palsy, made it her goal to [walk independently to collect her degree in 2013](https://theboar.org/news/2012/jun/12/student-determined-walk-independently/), and is hoping to raise £2,013 for children’s charity Starlight at the same time.

SU president-elect Nick Swain was also in a [car crash](https://theboar.org/news/2012/jun/22/swain-car-crash/).

**July**

University courses for the next academic year saw a [significant drop in demand](https://theboar.org/news/2012/jul/13/university-applications-down-89/). Warwick University students launched a [highly publicised campaign demanding an apology and compensation from security firm G4S](https://theboar.org/news/2012/jul/23/student-tackles-g4s-over-job-scandal/) for their failure to communicate with applicants.

WBS was named the [best in the UK and second best in the world](https://theboar.org/news/2012/jul/25/business-school-best-uk-and-second-best-world/).

**August**

Gentlemen’s club Shades, in Leamington, was [granted a sex establishment license](https://theboar.org/news/2012/aug/29/shades-sex-club-gets-green-light/) despite fierce opposition, the [University library entrance was refurbished](https://theboar.org/news/2012/aug/15/library-refurbishes-entrance-and-floor-4/) and Warwick scientists found a way to replace a lot of the [fat in chocolate with fruit juice](https://theboar.org/news/2012/aug/24/chocolate-just-got-healthier/).

**September**

After a lengthy campaign, [Bath Place surrendered the old library site in Leamington](https://theboar.org/news/2012/sep/27/bath-place-surrenders-old-library-site/), a [new tabloid announced it would be launching at Warwick](https://theboar.org/news/2012/sep/17/new-tab-loid-launch-warwick/) and the University’s [QS world ranking dropped whilst being named one of the most beautiful British universities](https://theboar.org/news/2012/sep/29/brains-or-beauty-uni-ranking-dives/) in another table.

**October**

It was announced that Warwick would receive a [new £92 million campus by 2015](https://theboar.org/news/2012/oct/19/new-92-million-campus-warwick-2015/), partly funded by the government funding. The [University agreed to significant changes](https://theboar.org/news/2012/oct/19/uni-caves-feedback/) to the policy on timings for returning academic work and Sammy, the campus Big Issue seller, [returned to campus](https://theboar.org/news/2012/oct/19/banned-big-issue-seller-returns-campus/) despite being banned by the University due to inappropriate behaviour.

**November**

Warwick students joined the National Students’ Union Demo in London, complaints over students’ behaviour increased from Leamington residents and the Campus experienced both flooding and a fire within the space of two weeks.

New Leamington housing also [caused uproar](https://theboar.org/news/2012/nov/14/uproar-new-leam-housing/) amongst its tenants at the condition of the accommodation. Vice-chancellor Nigel Thrift’s [travel expenses](https://theboar.org/news/2012/nov/28/thrifty-name-not-nature/) were also revealed by the paper.

**December**

Tragically, a [Warwick student was killed in Leamington](https://theboar.org/news/2012/dec/10/student-killed-leamington/) and claims were made that the student’s death was [due to the streetlight switch-off](https://theboar.org/news/2012/dec/21/claims-death-student-due-leam-streetlight-switch-/) which the _Boar_ reported on a few weeks previously. Backlash from the [Warwick’s women rowers’ naked calendar](https://theboar.org/news/2012/dec/23/naked-calendar-makes-national-news/) caught the attention of the national press.
