Jailbreakers escape to Europe

Students escaped campus to travel hundreds of miles with little more than the clothes on their back last week as part of Jailbreak.

220 students took part in the charity hitch-hike on the weekend of November 3.

The most successful team reached Faro in Portugal, 1500 miles away from campus.

“The event was a complete success with participants really getting involved in the challenges,” said Chris Gudde, president of the Jailbreak society.

Challenges included blogging free food and drinks, getting a commemorative Jailbreak tattoo and getting naked in front of landmarks.

Participants were given 36 hours to get as far away from campus as possible with no money, beginning at 9am on Saturday November 3 on the piazza.

Kate Carlin and David Harris managed to hitch-hike to Limoges in France and got naked in front of Benedictine Train Station.

“I thought the particular issue of the boar was appropriate because the front page had the headline questioning why everyone was getting naked,” said Kate.

“We both absolutely loved Jailbreak, we had some experiences we wouldn’t have otherwise had and the challenges in particular had us both pushing our limits.

Third-year Economics student Ben Alten said: “I guess it kind of restores your faith in humanity; being able to go a weekend.

“Relying on the generosity of the public to get you places and even give you food and drinks shows that people are nice after all, despite the image the media usually portrays.”

Second-year English and Creative Writing student Oli Stockley described Jailbreak as “probably one of the best things I’ll do all year”.

He added: “It’s a brilliant chance to meet loads of nice people and see loads of amazing places, and all while raising money for charity. It’s ridiculously good fun.”

The date of the next Jailbreak event is yet to be decided but is expected at the end of term 2 or the beginning of term 3.

The most successful team of Jailbreak participants ever was Destination Unknown in 2010 who managed to hitch-hike to Bangkok, 5,987 miles away.

The least successful team managed to get as far as Canley, but no further.
